Have a 99sv. Bought it new 20,000 miles now. No probs...until now. Left rear blinker went bad rode without for a couple weeks, changed it out. Then noticed highbeam was out (not sure how long, don't night ride much) so changed that tonight and then since I'm getting her ready for inspection I figured I'd check everything. So, blinkers work, taillight works, hbeam lbeam work, horn oh, oh...now that doesn't work.
So, is this some freaky coincidence or do I have a bad voltgage reg or something? Any ideas? |

Whilst the SV doesn't have the best reputation electrically speaking, there's no need for undue concern in this circumstance, a couple of bulbs blown isn't a reason to suspect electrical worries, which in this case would most likely be overcharging, but two bulbs do not a problem make so don't fuss.
To put your mind at rest though a voltage test is easily done, connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals, a meter with about a 20V DC range is ideal. At all engines speeds and both high and low electrical loads, the meter shouldn't read more than 15V. If you have a higher reading, you win a prize as you have the first ever SV with a charging system that works too well.

The horn is in the path of all the crap from the front wheel. Take it off and clean it up, paying attention to the terminals. Make sure that the connector from the main harness is clean and free of crud. Plug it all back together and make sure that the connector is pushed home properly.

Sometimes constantly lowing bulbs can be vibration, or a grotty earth connection - causes voltage flickers that you might not see but the bulb filaments don't like it. Check the main frame earths looks clean etc. Otherwise don't worry about it, it's only a few bulbs like the guys say.
