Greetings all, thought I'd pop over to the main UK boards, since our US based SV forum (svrider.com) seems to be out of comission at the moment
![]() Anyway, I have a question. I'm the proud owner of a new SV650SK5, and she runs absolutely beautifully. However, there's one interesting little thing that occurs once in a while. I've never heard anyone in the SV community talking about it, so I dont know if I should chock it up to the bike being new and the transmission still wearing in, or if I should mention it to my mechanic at the first service. The problem is this: After closed throttle deceleration in high gear (say, 6th, since it most often occurs in 6th) down to low engine speeds (say, when I'm practicing with my brakes and not going full-bore with the revmatching since the engine isnt worn in), when I attempt to downshift (so that I dont lug the motor)... it just... wont downshift. The shift lever either doesn't do anything... or it pops into some kind of no-mans-land between gears, then pops into gear as soon as I let the clutch out. Its kind of frustrating, since naturally I dont want to lug the motor, but I cant get it down the through the gears to bring engine speed up. The problem never happens when I downshift quickly, only when I close the throttle and decelrate. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm doing my deceleration clutch out or clutch in. Note that I dont upshift clutchlessly. I may, eventually, once the bike has a few more miles (I've done it on all my other bikes with no ill effect), but, for now, I'm avoiding it. Also, since buying the bike, I havent made single shift of anything less than perfect smoothness... other than when the aforementioned problem manifests itself. So, is this something other owners have dealt with? Is it something I can expect to go away in a thousand miles or so, as things mesh better in the gearbox? Or should I say to my mechanic 'yeah, this happens, check it out for me'? I mean, obviously, the bike is still under warranty, and I havent done anything to it that could void that, so I wouldnt be paying for it. Plus, short of being *totally* ham-fisted, I dont even see how you could damage a transmission through normal use in 100 miles. And I'm not ham-fisted in the least. |

That's normal.
You can't go from high speed to low speed and shift down multiple gears while almost at a stand still. Read this guide that explains how your gearbox works and why some things just isn't possible: http://www.vf750fd.com/blurbs/shifting.html |

Sounds fairly normal to me, though you might be able to get better results if you fiddle with the adjustment on the gear lever.

Heh. I've never had any similar problems with any of my other bikes. OF course, all my previous bikes have been... umm.. old. And not in the best of condition, especially as far as their gearboxes are concerned
![]() Cool then, thanks for the help. Just one of those things-about-a-bike-in-good-shape I've never had to deal with. Heh. |

i raced up the road the other day and couldnt slow down for the turning i needed so i dropped down to 1st or 2nd from about 60mph the back end was snaking all over the place<brown trouser moment! and the bike made a strange noise like the chain was jumping the sprocket's! i dont think it was cuz the chain is adjusted correctly, what could it have been? do the sv's have slipper clutches?
