Hi folks,
just got my SV and have ridden it only twice - briefly both times. Bike is an '02 with only 1500 miles on. When idling with the clutch out (like if I start the bike and then walk away to let it warm up) I notice it is kind of noisy. I've read a bit about the possible cam tensioner probs. It quietens up a bit if I pull the clutch lever in. If it were the cam chain or tensioners rattling - can't imagine why pulling the clutch lever in would change it. Same with valve clatter. I'm thinking its the clutch itself ratting a bit , maybe? Wish I could listen to someone else's SV at idle. But my friends all ride very LOUD cruisers and if their bikes had a top end noise prob, they'd never know! Because they'd never hear it! ![]() Haven't had this quiet of a bike in a long time, so maybe I'm just hearing things that are"normal". Can anyone confirm for me that sitting on the sidestand, idling in neutral with clutch lever out, thats there's a bit of a normal mechanical "clatter"? Or not? should I be freaking out? It looks like new, has only 1500 miles and rides like a dream. thanks, I have so much to learn yet. Have many other thing sto research too, so please forgive me for not spending hours searching the archives this one time. thx! ![]() Em black '02 "Onyx" Tampa, FL |

they tend to rattle more if the carb balance is out a bit, but yes I can hear the g/box internals whirring nicely especially when it's hot.
It's really not necessary to let it warm up before riding it, just start it and let it settle down for 20 or 30sec or so, then ride off gently. It doesn't do engines a lot of good by letting them warm up at idle especially using choke. Give it a few miles to warm properly before winding it up. ![]() |

most bike rattle with the clutch out (clutch basket so i'm told) honda's are worse.

Yes, mine is louder, and my dad said that it doesn't run as smooth as his bike, his guess is the carbs are out a bit. I dont warm it up generally, i did wih my RS, but with the sv just tend to open up garage, back i out, start bike, close garage and lock it (bout 20 secs, then ride it out the needlessly complicated route from my garage to the front of my house. Then usuallytake it up to about 5k revs (as its a 30) then take it up to 9k as soon as i reach a national speed limit (as it's restricted there's no power above there anyway)
