I love my SV650s K4, and I love riding bikes.
I am not so great at cleaning it, and have no idea on maintenance apart from checking tyre pressure, oil and chain slackness. If anything needs doing with the first two, I can just about cope. If it is the third or anything else - no chance I have to take it to the dealer. So this morning I put my bike in for it's 11,000 mile service, and was told it needed a new front tyre, not suprised with that as it is the original tyre on it. So I gave the ok to get it done, and have a BT020 put on to match the 7500 mile replaces rear tyre. I also asked them to ensure that as part of the service to look at, and adjust the chain as necessary, as I thought there was too much slack in it. The guy at the dealers said that I needed a new chain. Is this usual? The bike has a scottoiler (should have mentioned the other piece of maintenance I can manage!), and as I say has done 11,000 miles. I admit the chain has never been adjusted, unless it has been done in past services. I want to know if the guy has seen me coming, or whether it is feasible that this is in need of doing. For some reason I thought that I should expect aboou 20,000 miles from a chain. Any advice most welcome. |

Quite reasonable. You do also have to clean your chain aswell as keep it lubed otherwise months and months of grit can turn the muck on your chain into grinding paste which wears the chain quicker than normal.
Generally if the links have gone stiff, you can pull the chain off the back of the sprocket slightly or have a big tight spot then its best it is changed..a snapped chain can do horrid things!! You dont have to change the sprockets at the same time unless they are worn but its advisable.. |

Reasonable but on the short side, especialyl if you have a scottoiler and since a lot o your mileage will have been on break-in and therefore less stressful... But there's a lot of variables that could have shortened its life.

Does the chain look bad? When/if you park up near other bikes have a look at the chains on the other bikes and it should be easily visible on the chain (or sprocket) that yours is in need of replacement, if that is the case.
It's possible, but unlikely if the scottoiler is set up right. Has the chain been adjusted previously? It could be that if the chain has been running too slack for a long time, especially on a V-twin with the way they transmit the power, the chain may have suffered extra loading/wear due to the extra movement it's been able to do? |
