Default Top Gear Exhaust Comment

Just heard on Top Gear that government are thinking of slapping 74db limit on all motorbikes? Did anyone else hear this? Does anyone know about this? My exhaust is loud, but I am sure the standard will be above 74db at cerain rev ranges. And what about all Harleys?

I saw that too, Is that on all bikes or just new bikes must meet that regulation ?

My mate had his CCM tested at a recent sprint event he entered and that was 92 db.

i don't think any bike at the moment makes less than 74db even with a std can so presume they would only be able to enforce it with brand new bikes after its brought in, and any bikes at the moment that have a 'e' marked can are legal so i don't see what they could do.

Its from the mad Lord in North Yorkshire, he was interviewed by Johnie Walker last week.

Actually he spoke some sense and was only against raving mad loonies chasing through the Dales.

He actually agreed that 74db was too low and he liked to hear a well tuned bike being ridden sensibly.

The rest of Top Gear was spot on though with Jeremys comments being laughed at by the bikers :P

more scare mongering, probably based on last weeks MCN and the anti bike brigade that is top gear jumping on it.

for the record, the quality of reporting in MCN is becoming questionable. Given they freely printed the ICE hoax without checking makes me wonder what other stories they freely print without checking their facts.

And think about it now. Probably most bikers have a non-standard exhaust. MCN print a massive headline about noise levels. Call me cynical but I would say it was purely a headline to get the copy sales figures up.

I think Fraser or the other coppers on this forum would have said something about this law by now if it were true. I think MCN have confused the seizing of bikes under the Police Reform Act which can be done if a biker receives 2 dangerous driving charges in 12 months with their story about the decibel levels.

I do agree with your comments about MCN, but I still waste money on it for the results in club racing and what's on articles.

But as for the Law, it is a Lord in the house has proposed a new lower noise limit. Its not law, and has no chance of becoming law until it has gone through the process

70 db is bollox!!! A standard sv makes around 90 db, imagine it that much quieter...

Did you also notice that a couple of minutes before he started slating bikes again he'd being going on about how you could hear the Aston martin he'd tested from 2 miles away? So it's OK for a car to make noise but not a bike...

First of all... it's very nice that someone's come up with the figure of 74dB, but clearly this has not been tested and thought about. As Chutz says, the standard SV makes 90dB, if not a little more - technically making it illegal. It is not unique in this situation.

Imagine the cost and regulation issues that this would cause - simply not worth the hassle.

I also think that it would have to apply across the board - cars, motorcycles, trucks, lorries, busses, coaches... I could go on Bikes, generally, are the most unnoticeable of this list.
