Default rear ended

It only seems like a month ago that i posted about the off on my scoot. And here i am again.. but this time my beautiful mint k2 is no longer as mint as it was

I was at a rounabout about to pull of and I was edging forward as I thought there was a gap, but there wasn't so I stopped.

And then I flew off the bike.

Because some knob had decided that I had gone and drove into my rear end.

I lost it thought, think it was the shock I was on the floor with the bike on top of me and i managed to crawl out (r+gs help in many ways) and he goes " I thought you had gone" So I answer with well i obviously hadn't how could you miss me i'm bright ****ing yellow!

Anyway he was most apologetic and helped me get the bike up, shame cos he seemed like a nice lad but i think I scared him.

a biker stopped to make sure I was ok

then the police turned up, who were very nice. made sure i was ok etc, although we both got producers, which i was told is routine???

anyway they checked out the bike and said i should be ok to ride home. have just called the insurance and they are geting a garage to come pick the bike up.

damage looks worse - but not too bad

my right r+g took most of it but i now have a big crack in the rhs panel

i feel like i'm not cut out for biking, but it was his fault so i need to get a grip!! Am glad I rode home though

Oh- i forgot about me! think i spained my ankle and am developing a bruise on my left arm but am otherwise ok, so could have been much worse

Glad you're ok, it could have been much worse. Glad you got the r&g's? Yeah, getting a producer is standard. When a guy went into me, they gave us each a copy of each others producers for contact details.

Also would be worth getting onto your ins to get a solicitor maybe?

D'oh! Glad you're pretty much alright tho.

I've done that before and know a few others who have as well.
You're watching the oncoming traffic and you see a gap, anticipate the vehicle in front to go and you start to move only to realize they didn't take the gap you would have and whammo.

I hit a big bloody car (in my car and to make matters worse it was a heavily pregnant woman driving it) so it's not really a matter of 'seeing' anyone. You're just not looking where you should be.

Glad you're okay and hopefully the bike's not too bad and it all goes through his insurance nicely.

There is a lesson to be learned here though. When you move forward most car drivers think you've gone and look right checking if it's clear for them and if it is then they just go without looking ahead and to their left to double-check you're not still their (as they should).

So my advice is learn from this (even though you weren't at fault) and only ever move the bike forward (and ride off) in that situation when there's definitely a gap for you to enter the roundabout. That way you'll safeguard yourself as much as possible.

Glad to hear you're mostly OK. I was shunted last year while stopped at a lolipop crossing so know what it's like; a lot of the reaction is shock because you have no idea that it was coming, it's just bang, wallop, over. You'll probably feel a bit more bruised over the next couple of days. I'd suggest that you write down how you feel each day, if you want to claim for personal injuries it's 2/3 months down the line before you get to see the insurance doctor, and it's hard to remember all the detail oif how you felt by then.

You should ask your insurance company to instigate legal protection straight away, I made the mistake of leaving it for a couple of weeks as I felt so awful, and a year on I'm still sorting stuff out as a result. If you've damaged any clothes, rucksak or need a new lid these'll be be claimed through the legal, as will recovering your excess. Remeber to push your insurer for more, whatever they offer - in a case like this where it's clear cut they know they won't be paying and are usually willing to settle for more.

The accident investigation officer who came to hospital explained the producer to me, you do get one regardless (even though in my case the guy was charged with careless driving), one of the reasons being it stops the guy who hit you claiming that something about you/your bike contributed (although I don't see how this could apply when hit from behind, I guess that it's just policy).

Don't be put off about getting back on. I must admit I'm not as confident as I was before, and I do ride more defensively now, but there are still sunny mornings when a blast on the bike makes you smile

Glad you're mostly OK
Liam

PS The avatar is the bike from the above, have replaced with a shiny new silver K3

Glad to hear you're ok... and hope the insurance/bike fixing gets sorted without too many hassles.

Done a similar thing when in my old car, except the guy in front had actually gone, then stopped several metres onto the roundabout to argue with his partner. It's easy to expect someone to have gone when you can see a space... but so long as it gets sorted and they're genuinely apologetic it's not so bad.

Main thing is to not let it put you off... got knocked off big-time a few months back and I seriously thought about not getting another bike but now I have one I'm very glad I did - even more fun than before the off! Maybe look into getting some training? IAM do a "skills for life" thing for £85 and I'm going for that.

Thanks all for your replies.

The bike has just been picked up by lonsdale bikes so i am bikeless for approx 2 weeks

Jonboy you are right as usual, i didn't move far but most car drivers just don't look properly.. i'm gonna join iam as soom as i get the bike back. I am usually so defensive when driving, but was a bit late for work so maybe that was it. Was gonna leave it until i was a bit more confident but think maybe it will help with that anyway.

liam- thanks for the advice about the legal stuff- it turns out they rang me about the injury.. i played it down but she is sending me a pack anyway. I don't need any new stuff as my leathers did pretty well, i pretty much just fell over i suppose.

Seeing the bike in the back of the van was awful. I really miss it already it feels like i haven't even got to know it yet, although they'll probably sort out that rear wheel squeak i had

jebiah - the guys bumper fell off! but saying that i think it was stuck on with gaffer tape anyway!!!

Gonna try not to wallow in pity too long, could have been worse, etc...
