Default how to change the chain

changing the chain

what the best way to change a chain, i know that you can get the old one with a splitter or angle grinder.

The new that i am putting on is an original sv (off a bike now racing in minitwins) and it has come with one of the rivet type links

I belive that you join these rivet type links by pressing them together but which bit of the link do you press on (the middle of the link or the pins) and can you use anything that exerts pressure such a clamp etc?

cheers

The best way is to get somebody with all the tools and know how to do it.
The second best is to buy the proper tools and figure it out yourself, like I did. I decided that I was going to need the tools occasionally so for the price of getting it done at a garage I got myself kitted out.

As for doing it with a clamp, you certainly could, but it's a fiddly job with the proper tool, so I personally wouldn't like to try it.

oh, and for putting the link together, assuming it's a soft rivet link, you use a clamp gently to squeeze the plates down onto the rivets until the new link is the same width as the proper ones. It will probably be slightly stiffer. make sure you get loads of the wax in there before you close it.
Now you need a clamp with a pin so you can close the rivets, they're either the type you open up or the type you squash out. Make sure you don't pinch the plates anymore.

Just about to do mine too (right now), bought a motrax chain tool (£45) that clamps it and rivets it in place also.

Only thing I want to know is the o ring chain came with two links. One with a spring clip, one without. I assume I'm okay NOT to use the spring clip? Whats the advantage of using the spring clip anyway? Is it jsut for emergencies/a temporary solution?

cheers

They give you both so you can put the spring clip on and gently ride to a garage to get the rivet link put on for you. Some people say spring links are perfectly safe, but I would use them as temporary if you have a proper rivet to put on.

Hi again

Okay, so in the 2hours I've been away, the chain has been fitted (got there in the end, was a bit fiddly but I was doing it completely wrong ) and the ninjas rear caliper unsiezed.

The chain I put on the sv650s 1999 is a 110 link chain. Is that right? It seems awfully slack! I have put it to the correct tension and looking to the right of the little adjuster plate, I only have ONE notch left.

Does that seem okay? Don't tell me I really should have removed a link.
