Default possible to convert SV1000S to SV1000K3?

hi all,

i'm new to the forums here, don't own an SV yet, but am looking to buy one eventually. there is a 1000S for sale near where i live, but has been laid down and the upper fairing is busted up pretty good. i am curious about the feasibility of just removing the fairing, maybe replacing the headlights with a single round one, and running it as a 1000K3 instead. any thoughts?

Like some other things in life bikes are much nicer naked.

K3 is the model number btw not that it is unfaired.

Converting from 'S' to 'N' is certainly possible, but even though the naked is rather less common than the faired bike, it surely must be worth trying to find one, if that's what you want to own.

If you want to do it anyway you'll need either an 'N' top yoke and 'bar clamps, or possibly you could drill the 'S' top yoke and fit proprietary risers and your choice of handlebar, the 'N' top yoke would be preferable as you'll need the mounts for the instruments. The control cables and switch wiring may need to changed for longer ones as the 'bars will be somewhat wider. Some headlamp brackets and a suitable light unit and you're away, only needing a little bit of fiddling with the wiring to suit the new lighting and indicators.

Bear in mind that the 'N' swingarm is approximately 5/8" longer than the 'S', the frame is slightly different and recently someone suggested to me that the fork offset is different too, (but I've yet to check this), these add up to quite some difference in the two bikes presumably to suit the handling of the two differing riding positions.

Yes it is, K3 means naked, SK3 means faired, an SV1000, (whatever year), is a naked - an SV1000S is a faired.

Sounds like a good idea to me IF the bike is cheap.Remember it will always be a crashed bike done up and will be worth less money if you sold it.I think the different chassis geometry is to help stop the naked one from lifting the front wheel. But if you want to be a wheelie king_______

hey, thanks for all the advise...

first off: yes, the bike is quite cheap, and except for the fairing has very little damage. that is the primary reason i am even considering it since i do prefer the naked (however you care to specify it) model.

one more question: is the riding position really all that different between faired and not? i suppose if it was different due to different probable riding styles i could understand though.

somewhat OT, but i am a fairly tall individual (a couple inches over 6 feet), and would prefer to have a more upright/comfortable riding position... which style is more comfortable for taller riders? i'm rather scrawny if that makes a difference. i guess i should test drive both types one after the other, but that still may not give a good feel for longer durations.

thanks again,
jay

Definately the unfaired position if you wanna be comfortable. Had a mate on an unfaired SV1000 with renthal high rise bars. Needless to say he looked the comfiest out of the lot of us.

Just as an addition to the tall question, I recently test rode an SV1000S and found it to have a much more relaxed posture than the 650S. It reminded me alot of the curvy riding position.
