Default turning over quickly but not starting

hello all
am having problems starting the sv650, its a 2000 model. it turns over what seems to be quicker than normal, although this may just be my perception of it because im used to hearing it start first go but it does not start as it used to. i have an optimate fitted and it is stored under a cover outside. any ideas?
cheers ryan

I'm thinking ignition... and rectifier or coils.

oh sheeet

dont want to be a doom & gloom merchant but if it is turning over quicker than normal with the starter then that could point to a lack of compression

If its getting a spark at the plug end cap, then the compression would be the next thing I would test

let us know what happpens

hang on... are the pistons actually moving? If not, your starter clutch might have gone, or at least stuck.

Does sound like the coil. It wont even try to fire. found with low compression it will try...if that makes any sense

thanks for all the replies
its a fickle beast this bike of mine it started first turn on sunday morning i rode it for a good thirty miles left it for a few hours at the shops came back and it was doing the turning over what seemd quite quick and not sparking. i got it going after about 20 attempts what seemed to work was openig the throttle wide open and trying then the next go no throttle at all it started. does that make sense to you it doesnt to me, but i dont have a clue mechanically.
cheers ryan

Have you had the plugs out and looked at them?How old are they?
Failing that it could be a fueling problem.The plugs might tell you that as well.

the plugs should be alright because i have had the bike dealer serviced three times in the last six months because of the highish mileage i do. But im pleased the bike got me home today because in the space of a few hundred metres on the a4 my wing mirrors got clipped at walking pace, unbalanced i put my foot down which a car ran over..didnt actually hurt. though im not keen for a repeat performance. then someone changed lanes without indicating i had to swerve ridiculuosly and i dont know how i missed them. so the bike chose a good day to behave itself!
