I need to replace the air filter on my SV ('02 curvy)
I don't know wether to replace with a standard Suzuki (or pattern) or go for a performance one. Will a performance filter require re-jetting / adjustment of the carbs ? Any reccomendations for the best performance filter to fit ? Does a performance filter make much difference anyway (otherwise standard bike) ? Good places to buy online for any of the above ? Thanks in advance. ![]() |

I've just fitted a K&N filter on my pointy SV650 SK4 and the bike was running very lean. Remap is a must if you want to get the most out of a performance filter, I found I had to increase it by ~5% throughtout the rev range.
In terms of "feel", you will gain at the top end but lose a little bit of grunt at the lower end. I also noticed the fuel consumption to be improved, especially on motorway trips. I would say that the fuel you save after 2500 miles would be enough to offset the cost of the filter and remap (a little odd considering the remap should feed more fuel into the engine...), but that might just be my bike. |

If you've got carbs then you'll definitely need to rejet, which is a bit of a pain by all accounts (and if you don't it will run like a dog). The difference will be truly minimal in terms of an outright performance gain but will likely give you better throttle response.
The best mods I've found are a larger rear sprocket (go up by two teeth), fit an R6 throttle tube (increases engine response considerably), and if you dont mind the aggro of fitting it the 4 degree ignition advance key (which will give you a beautiful low down and fat torque curve). Also consider that any major preformance gains will also affect your insurance, so bear that in mind. . |

Considered going for an air filter myself but decided that the gains probably werent worth the effort so have gone the route below...

I just thought....
If suzuki always claim much higher BHP for the SV than realworld output, then you could always do some mods, get it dynoed and get it up to the claimed power level. Then the insurance companies might have a problem claiming a power increase on your bike, when actualy there was none as the bike was supplied with lower than claimed power and you are already paying for the claimed power output.

It's certainly a good point, but I rather feel that Suzuki would admit that it was power at the crank rather than the rear wheel and your case (in the hands of a good prosecuting lawyer) would doubtless fall apart.
On the other hand it would be almost impossible for them to prove what your bike was producing at the crank as they'd have to take the engine out and have it dynoed by a specialist which would be exhorbitantly expensive. I think the end result would be that in the event of a claim they'd simply refuse to pay out and you'd have to hire Sythree to sue them ![]() . |

Eek , just seen how much a stage one jetting kit is
![]() ![]() £30 quid for the filter, £80 for the jet kit ![]() Think I'll go for standard £18 Suzuki one ![]() I think I need to learn to ride a bit better before I make the thing go any faster anyway. Thanks for your advice chaps. ![]() |

If you pop into Hein Gericke they do 5 litres of Motul semi-synth oil, oil filter and air filter all for £24.99!

Yes, but that's only if they have it in stock. I only got the oil and oil filter for the same price (£24.50) and the fact they didn't have the air filter is tough luck
![]() How does the R6 throttle tube improve response? |
