i know some of you are techie geeks so here goes.

since having aol broadband installed i can no longer access certain sites through IE

tried installing Firefox and this has not helped. main problem pages are microsoft (including the update pages) and ebay.

i've cleared my cookies etc, used malware and spyware removal programs.
cleaned up my registry, accepted them as exclusions to my firewall etc now it's driving me mad
currently running XP Home sp2 ie 6

any help PLEASE!!!!

could it be a lan problem?

I have herd of this happening to many other people when going over wireless networks. Have to tried to see if there is an firmware update for the router?

You first should check to see that you can resolve the site host name to IP using a prog like Ping.

Start > Run > CMD (press enter) > ping www.sitehostname.com

You should get the hostname then an IP address (something likte this 212.23.2.1), if you get that at least your router is passing DNS querys.

If you dont get anyting then there is a bit of a problem.

Most home routers proxy the DNS instead of putting the direct DNS address onto your lan connection. It may be an idea to manualy enter it into the lan settings on your computer.

already tried to ping it, request times out see below;

c:\>ping www.microsoft.com

pinging lb1.www.ms.akadns.net [207.46.198.60] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out

Packets sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 <100% loss>

is the response i get

the page does not give an error, takes forever to load then the page cannot be displayed

PS running a desktop so not technically wireless but there is a router and my psp (internet enabled through wlan too, woohoo) wont access the same sites

interestingly i can't ping www.sv650.org but i can load the page

shows that the ping is atleast resolving, the reson for request timed out is be cause they are using a firewall.

Ok the issue is most likley to be your MTU settings on the router/modem. What do you use to connect to the internet, what type of connection and with who do you connect with.

connect using an edimax usb plug in supplied by my dad's it man from work, runs through a lan cable to a lynksys box connected to my dad's comp and the hole in the wall, also wireless to my sis's laptop and my PSP

SP is aol (not my choice)

adsl connection

i tend to minimise aol and just use ie but this problem is preventing me from doing so, ebay etc load in aol but that still leaves me a microsoft update problem through aol which they cannot resolve

AOL can be set to run without the program open. You just need to setup a dial up netowrking connection to AOL using your main account username & password (needs to have 18+ access turned on).

Change the mtu on aol to 1400, default is 1500

If you want i can do it for you via remote assistance on MSN messenger
