K and N Air Filter, what servicing does this need. - SV650.org

Hi Guys

After loosing a bit of faith in my local dealer I have decided to service the bike myself this year.

I have got nearly everything done and I was wondering about the K & N air filter. I have only done about 2,000 miles on it since I fitted it. I have taken it out and given it a good shake. What else does it need?

Hoovered out?
Oiled? (and with what if you don't have the correct oil)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Funnily enough just come in from the garage having been doing exactly this.

First off if its only done 2,000 miles leave it, every 20-30 k is normally fine for a K&N mayebe more for winter milage with the salt.

Service process.

Shake the filter and brush it with a soft brush to remove large foriegn bodies.

Sspray the filter with K&N cleaning solution (or any really good soap based cleaner) leave to soak for 10 minutes

Rinse under low pressure water (ie tap) from the clean side backwards

I normally repeat this process

Leave to dry normally, dont use compressed or heated air to speed the drying

Oil with K&N filter oil

Re-fit to the bike

Actual time taken about 40 minutes but dry it overnight

I took mine out at 4200 miles to give it a blow with some compressed air and it was mint, not even a bit of dirt in there, so it went straight back in.

Spraying is for the impatient. Carfully lay it in the missus favorite pan, to soak in dish wash soap and water. Reinstall original filter and ride away.

Return, shake it in the pan, watch the dirt float off.

Rinse, shake, air dry. To ruin it, blow it dry with compressed air.

For a bike filter, just hose it down now with oil, let it sit a half day, reinstall and off you go.

For a car fiter, with MAF, spray less oil than you think will do, around perimeter and across middle. Put on shelf and go to work on Monday morning. Wednesday night it will be ready. Too much oil contaminates the Mass Airflow Sensor.

Yeah just buy the K&N cleaning KIt. I think it's around a tenner.

It will have all the instructions + pictures on there

Thanks Guys,

To be honest when it took the filter out it looked absolutely minted adn still seemed quite oily. I think i will leave oit until next service as the bike only does about 4,000 miles a year.
