I've been filling my curvy with Shell Optimax since the day I got it, over 2000 miles ago, and it's been running fine. The engine has had the ignition advance woodruff key installed, and Optimax has always run smoother for me.
After taking the baffle out of my end can, I noticed that the bike was responding a little different, there's no power serge at around 6k revs. The other day, I was passing a Tesco and needed a fill, so I filled with their Super Unleaded (99RON), and the bikes been behaving a bit wierd. It's not as responsive as before from a standing start, and just feels rough. This morning, I started it, which took a couple of goes, then when I undid the choke, the bike idled, but as soon as I turn the throttle, the bike stalls. I have tried everything I can think of, and the bike won't run. Even with the choke full engaged, the revs only went up to about 3.5k, normally goes to 4.5k. Is there somthing a miss with the Tesco fuel? |

Could be due to the bike running leaner due to you taking the baffle out although i doubt it as it doesnt make that much difference.
Optimax can mess up spark plugs though due to the additives in the fuel. Id recommend some new plugs to start with and go from there. I know running optimax in our Skyline (Car) that unless we alternate std fuel with optimax the plugs dont last as long. Is quite a common thing apparantly according to the guys that work on our car. Id imagine Tesco's 99rn fuel has the same additives and it could just be a build up over time. No real need to run super anyway. Std fuel is fine unless your engines tuned and running a large advance. |

Nice to get a reply from someone who knows what they're talking about.
I know the bike's been running lean, hence the power surge loss, but perhaps the switch to 99RON has finally gone a bit too far. Note I've only done 60 miles on the stuff. Might get some sparks, then shall I use BP Ultimate instead? Or do you reckon anything's fine? I've been using Optimax in my Pug 306 (only a 1.4) for 2 years, no problems there. |

try the plugs and if the bike hasnt been rejetted to run with the can etc then get that done also. If you have spent out on a can then its worthwhile getting it jetted to suit otherwise its a waste of money. You will get far better performance and not so many running problems.
TBH stick with the normal unleaded its fine and cheaper to buy. Best bet is to get it from a station that gets regular deliveries that way you know the fuel is "fresh". I only use super when i am racing. On trackdays i use std unleaded and TBH havent seen much difference. Get it jetted, new plugs and all should be well. (please bear in mind diagnosis online isnt easy!!!) |

How much am I expecting to spend to get it jetted?
And if so, Is it worth getting a performance filter too, beforehand? I got a CCC can as it was cheap, so don't plan on spending too much. If you can recommend anywhere in London/Essex, great! |

I run my bike on optimax in the cold weather as it seems to run better. I've used the esso 99ron as well and havent had any problems with that. So I think it might not be the fuel thats causing your problems. But I could be wrong.
One thing I will ask is that how cold was it this morning, the last few morning my bike has been running like a total piece of poo. Just wandered if yours might be suffering to ?

Yep the cold is no doubt part of the problem. The air's been cold today, but I didn't even get down to the bottom of the road.
I might try putting the baffle back in, and see if that'll get me to work. I know that it should really be rejetted anyway, cos the can's messed things up a bit since I took the baffle out. |

I haven't had any problems with car or bike using Optimax or the tesco's 99 stuff. If anything, I found the SV and definitely the car ran better on the higher octane stuff. I'm no expert but I would be very surprised if it was the fuel that is causing the problem. Logically, if it did damage vehicles, can you imagine the outcry?
I did find the SV didn't like running in the cold though, that might be it? I had a similar problem with the SV cutting out and it was down to the cold and the re-map that I had had done was during summer so now that its cold, it was running too lean. |

I think it's probably not the fuel per se, but rather the higher octane stuff doesn't respond well to running lean maybe?
