Default Internet... how/what/why etc.. your story ?

So, what does everyone do with the interenet then ?

I found the internet waaay back in 1999 lol... well, actualy 1998.. but it took me until then to know what I was doing Use to spend many of my free hours chatting to people on the old chat pages before they got shut down... MSN, Yahoo.. Lycos.. and several others...

then started to play games online, my type of games are flight sims... its something completly different to actualy try and fly against another human opponent.. quite a bit of a buzz actualy, knowing that your not fighting some dumb AI routine, but another person whos trying to gun you down as well...

downloaded a few instant messenger programmes then, as a way to help those of us flying to swap IP numbers etc to join games..

then along with that came voice comms... so not only are you flying against/with people.. you can now talk to people from all over the world. along with the banter that goes with it When it was open there was a place where people with simular games would meet... no one ever knew each other most of the time!

Side effect from those IM proggies was that other people wanted to talk to you as well... but get a chance to talk to people all over the world again after the chat sites had shut... met a few people I have talked too... some were good experiences, others not so good I think I was taken advantage of for being a bloke by the odd female not experiences I want to repeat mind you, as I didnt want some things to happen (*lying through teeth*), as they end up playing with your head after they decide they're all done and dusted with you... or simply changed their minds.. had one or two of these sadly which is one or two too many for me.. if only I could travel through time! *steps into Quantum Leap accelerator* (those who have met me may find the funny side of that.. as I have a certain resemblance to one Scot Baccula

Also, the interweb's a good place to find information, and lots of it! reading the news, sports, and other stuffs..... I like reading about current events, and military technology.. so spend a few hours a week just reading what some people would class as gobble !

Also was good for finding out about bikes... hence how I found this place, I had bought my SV and stashed it away at my mates house for a while before telling my parents, and was just looking for info.. and found myself here though not been an SV owner since September... I still keep my unwanted presence around here!

Go on the odd rideout, couldnt make AR05 as me and my bike were involved in a slight incident with a fluffy woolen creature in May, and Suzuki parts being well known for getting parts delivered quickly I was bikeless during that one, so was unhappily stuck at home for a while nursing a bad knee and a wounded hand... been on a few of the more local ones, guided one or two around my area.... not been able to loose any of them yet though (must try harder!)

Now got me a Kwak (parts can be delivered next day thank god!).... costs me a small fortune, and I end up taking it appart most weekends, so still the odd question for other members here for their ever greater knowledge on all thinks two wheels than me!

Any takers ?? lol

EBAY! Great, (I'm an ebay *****)

Handy, fast source of bike and car info, shopping for go-faster bits, bling etc...

I don't use the PC for gaming at all really. Mine has an old school spec, starts steaming and blowing seals at the very thought of it.

Got involved in about 1994 running a BBS ( no internet then ), at 300, then 2400, then 14400 baud. Hooked up to the web as soon as I heard about it, was the 3542'nd person to join ICQ.
Mainly use it as a tool these days, downloading episodes of Lost and the like on bittorrent. I use ebay occasionally, but have given up online banking after having my account details sold by 'some indian call centre laddie'.
AS CB radio altered the course of my life in the early 80`s, the interweb has has a similar influence, having found friends I'd never otherwise have met.

I was using JANET way, way, way back.... lets just say it starts with an 8...

I was taught at Cranfield on my forensic courses by one of the military computer bods who was instrumental in the internets development. Back in the days when an email address only needed to be Tony@Cranfield.

Though working for the NHTCU I have seen the downsides more than the positive. But certainly I wouldnt have met my partner if I hadnt been on visordown and using the forum, or so many fantastic people on here.

1998 i first got a pc and my first taste of the web. As a result i drove around USA the following year to meet 4 girls i had met on chat sites but did not click with any of em in a romantic way
Then met a cute American architect on another chat site and as i had just sold a house that had made me good money i bought myself a beemer 325 and invited her to join me on a 2 week trip to Paris and Amsterdam (nice cakes there )

We got married a year later and 6 year anniversary soon!

Mainly use the web for holidays as we travel a lot and of course for the wonderful knowledge you can get from this site. Also almost always search for reviews on things before i buy.

Web totally changed my life

1994 when there were only a few million people on it, modem's were 33.3 and you had to pay per minute to connect plus a £20 subscription.

I was 16 and at college, spent a lot of time on ICQ, following that Lycos. I guess i was unusual in that most people back then had never even thought about connecting and the PC boom hadnt started. There was no Google!

I currently use it as a tool and my link to the outside world. No phone line anymore. If i could get decent TV through it i'd just have the broadband connection.

I can't remember exactly, but it was back in the mid 90s when connecting to the net was a slow and painful process.

Saw the possibilities of the internet quite early on (about 1996/7), having always worked in the realm of marketing databases and the like.
Of course nothing worked properly in those days, and the computers were really slow & used to crash all the time
Got involved in several startup companies (anyone remember boo.com )

Made lots of money - hurrah

Lost most of it in the crash - boohoo

Now reduced to having to work for someone else for a living, like most people

But it was fun while it lasted
