Default Engine Stall

Hi, hope you can help. My wife rides a naked '00 650 curvey.

She was riding along minding her own business yesterday. 40 mph 3rd gear, changed down to 2nd and the engine stalled. All lights idiot lights came on. Whipped in the clutch, pressed the starter and she fired up. This is about the 3rd time this has happened. Any Ideas what to look at?

Oh---forgot to mention. The rev counter has some crash damage from before we bought the bike. Dont know if this could interfere with the electrics.

How much crash damage?
is the wiring exposed?
can you see the revs at all?

you're unlikely to go all the way down to idle revs on a gear change (just removing load), I'd be more inclined given the age of the bike to check out the rear loom (chaffing problem) or an electrical connection somewhere.

run the bike up without the panels on and give the wiring a go shake around, see if you can locate the problem that way?

Of course it could be carberation, fuelling, coils, leads, plug caps or plugs, but if otherwise the bike is running normally , that would be my starting point.

Cheers Mark.

Yep has happened to me before. I just put it down to the slowing momentum of the engine and changing gear caused it to stall for some reason. I was not happy as it happened just a second or two before going into a corner, lucky i was quick on starting it up again and continued.

Chrome cowl was smashed when we bought it and after months of looking for used one( with no luck) I bought a new cowl and fitted that. The rev counter sort of works. Some times it does some times it dosnt. But the bike runs well other wise. Ticks over fine and pulls well. The problem only occurs following a downward gear change apparently. Just dies completely until the starter is pushed.

Ditto, mine runs flawlessly, then for no reason just splutters and 'misses a beat' ... not usually enough to actually stall the motor completely, but it certainly jolts the drive and is like it is switched off for a fraction of a second!

I have just put it down to a ‘feature’ of the bike?!

Its possible the rev counter is shorting things out somewhere, but the actual feed is just T’d off the wire to the CDI. You could try unplugging the rev counter totally to eliminate this possibility? Looking at the diagram, I don’t think this should have any effect on the electrics?
