Help!! Engine Problem - Running Very Poorly - SV650.org

Earlier today I thought to myself "Hmmm..haven't checked the SV forum for a while, must do that". Now I'm here with a serious issue

It's quite had to describe, so bear with me!

Riding home today I flicked the bike through a roundabout, and went to accelerate away. It immediately ran poorly/rough. (This is where it gets hard to describe

) Rolling on the throttle, it just felt stangled. It was revving, though not as well as before, but it just wasn't producing the power it should. Muffled is another adjective that springs to mind. I stopped, and had a bit of a play, during which time it did cut out a couple of times just as I went to open the throttle.

Now, until Wednesday the bike hadn't been used for a couple of months (holiday plus busyness and new dog). I commuted on it Wednesday(approx. 60 miles round trip), had a small trip out Thursday night, and it was ok this morning (actually, flippin fantastic!

) and for half the commute home. When it first happened I hoped

it was some kind of fuel blockage and that it would clear itself, but it didn't. I know I have enough fuel as I'd only done 90 miles on that tankfull. There's also enough oil in it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? Are there any sensors that could have worked themselves loose??

Or am I going to have to take it to a stealership for them to try and diagnose (ie rack up a large bill)??

Oh, bike is a K5 S with about 3.6K miles, CCC can, BMC airfilter, and the FI has been Teka'd.

Dump the fuel and put fresh stuff in. Flush the fuel system. Sounds very much like contaminated fuel.

Check your plugs and leads as well. Perhaps there is a loose connection in there.

Just had a look through the manual (God bless this site

)and think the first port of call will be removing and cleaning the fuel filter. Sods law that this has happened before a really busy weekend though!

I've had mine running poorly and cutting out before in bad weather and it turned out to be due to spark plug/HT lead problems. It may be worth cheking out the spark plug and the connection between the HT lead and plug, cut a little bit off the lead and rethread it into the cap then put a bit of silicone sealant around the joints will help if this is the problem (this should only be on the front cylinder, the rear one is tucked away in the dry).

I have got the older SV so maybe this isn't likely to be the problem anymore but it might be worth a look.

Even after cleaning the fuel filter, still ditch the old fuel and stick some fresh stuff in.

As Bigape suggested, unleaded fuel will go off after 2/3 months and that will make your bike run rougher than a badger's ****.

Forgot to do an update.

Do you know that the fuel filter on the FI models is over £150?

Yup. Luckily it wasn't that!

Took it into GW and it was the coil, which was replaced under warranty.
