Default Battery

Question - I have ordered and received a charged but dry battery, the instructions state that I need to fill the battery with acid. Would filling the battery with distilled water and charging it do the same thing? - is acid really neccessary if so where can you get battery acid?

No, that won't work, you need battery acid.

Try a bike shop or car exhaust centre, Kwik-Fit or similar, they should be able to help.

What battery did you buy? It's most usual to receive the battery and the acid in a sealed container.

You need acid, you use distilled water when ‘topping up’ only. Unfortunately you need to go to a battery place or a car/bike shop. They will charge you at least a tenner for the privilege … making that nice cheap mail order battery as expensive as getting one from your local shop in the first place …. been there done that!!!

Quite a few of the black batteries come with separate acid packs, yours didn’t obviously?

The battery is obviously not charged without acid in it.

Yes, it can be, but it won't function without acid in it.
The plates that make up the battery can be produced with the chemical properties that they need in order to be charged, but of course the charge cannot flow without the acid there to facilitate the chemical process.

I stand corrected, thanks
