Default holiday sickness???

My wife and daughter are currently holidaying in Cyprus, unfortunately the daughter has gone down with a tummy bug and they ended up calling out a doctor, she has spent the last 4 days in hospital being fed antibiotics, on a drip to re-hydrate her and null by mouth. They are due to fly home tomorrow.

The sickness and diarrhoea stopped 2 days ago but the hospital will not discharge her, the wife has talked to others who seem to think that this particular private hospital has a reputation of detaining patient longer than necessary to milk the insurance money.

The holiday company know she is in hospital and have twice visited. The wife is getting to the end of her tether and is talking about a self discharge. I have cautioned against this as the flight may want a doctor’s certificate of being fit to travel.

Has anyone any experience of holiday sickness? Do the hospitals unnecessarily delay patient discharge? Would the airline require a certificate of being fit to travel as the company would probably be aware of a self discharge?

I broke my shoulder in the dominion republic i wasn't detained after they took xrays and gave me a pain killing injection and strapped it up but other than about 3 hours here that was it.

The doctor at the resort gave me an injection 2 days later and a bill to pay which the insurance company sorted out with us after.

so no i wasn't detained unnecessarily

But i would ring the insurance company and the flight operator to see if you need any documentation to fly home if not leave.

Last year in Cyprus (Protaras) my daughter got an ear infection. We took her off to the doctors, expecting to get a prescription and go down the road to the pharmacy get some drops and maybe some tablets.

10 minutes later an ambulance appears, takes us all for a 20 minute ride to some clinic, where we wait for an hour, then she sees a specialist who um's and ah's for 20 minutes before putting some drops in her ear and giving her some tablets. Cost was about £150 for all that lot (oh sorry - that included the mandatory follow up visit to check all was OK).

My story was one of the less outrageous ones from people we spoke to. Basically they are scamming the insurance companies out of a fortune by providing way over the top treatment, but in the end we'll pay when the premiums shoot up.

Compare this to Kefalonia the year before, where I got an ear infection and was sent to the local pharmacist to get antibiotics without a prescription at all, total cost less than a tenner.

Cheers Keith

would you rather they ignored her symptoms and shoved her out the door....i am sure that when it comes to your families health...cost is not an issue...or maybe it's just me..i hope your daughter is well tim, truly i do. and you sound like a fair bloke to me. if it were me i would be pestering them to "over treat" .

hope all goes well

Toursit Tum hey? All too much sun, gallons of alcohol and perhaps not being overyl used to lashings of olive oil on your food is liable to make anyone sh*t through the eye of a needle. :P
Which can often result in one having sphincter like a blood orange!

You may notice a particular term borrowed from the English Medical Journal.
