Default engine surging at tickover

Hi guys
I noticed yesyerday on the way home down the motorway that the bike was not running as smooth as usual. It surges a small amount throughout the rev range, and is more noticeable when idling. if i blip the throttle when parked up the revs dont settle quickly it surges about 200 - 300 revs before after about ten seconds it settles down to idle a bit smoother at about 1300rpm. I am useless mechanically so all I have done so far is change the spark plugs today which has not changed a thing.
Any advice would be much appreciated, as its not due for a service for another 800 miles.
Cheers Ryan

Hiya, Not sure if you've got a curvey (up to 2002) or pointy (2003 onwards). If you have a curvey I would suggest checking that the choke cable is moving smoothly, and not sticking or cracked anywhere along the line. ALso when were the cabs or injectors last balklenced? How many miles does the bike have on it?

Hi there
Thanks for the interest.
Its a curvy and has done 25000miles, so i think the next service is the carb sync one. I did try and look at the choke cable but couldnt tell by looking wwhether its sticking . Is there any way of knowing which one of those it could be? Is there any way I can check it.
Thanks again
Ryan

Things to check...

Are the throttles returning correctly or getting stuck? Oiling throttle cables may help here, as may oiling/greasing the throttle mechanism.

Throttle Position Sensor

Might be stuck chokes, removing the plungers a pain the the proverbial (expect to replace the screws), although would expect the bike to be very rough if it was this.

Not necessarily, The front plunger was stuck in the open position on mine. It ran what I can best describe as "a little lumpy" but when using the revs more vigorously I couldn't tell the difference.

I have seemingly fixed the problem. I pulled the choke switch as far open as i could and shut it and it was idling much better. I suspect therefore that the choke switch was a little stiff because I had not been using full choke to start in the warmer weather so it hadnt been pulled fully open for a few months.
It feels much nicer to ride now its smooth on the throttle again.
