Default Shorter Dog bones, rearsets or jack up plates?

After my second track day I found I was having the pegs touch down a few times, even when hanging off with my knee down. So I am now thinking of getting some extra clearance with either shorter dog bones or rear sets/jack up plates. Just for note everything on my bike is standard apart from screen and crash bungs. So here are the questions:-

Shorter dog bones-

By lifting the rear this will give more clearance, and with a steeper head stock angle will make the bike turn in quicker. Does the shorter dog bone and altered rear geometry make the rear suspension stiffer or softer, and how does this affect the bike? How much more "unstable" does the bike become? Are there any other effects?

Rear Sets/Jack up plates-

Have looked at a few previous posts regarding these, do they affect comfort much, I'm just under six foot and use the bike for touring as well as track days, I've heard from some people that moving the peg back and up can sometimes make the bike comfier, is this true? Has anyone got any links for jack up plates, I've heard of buster plates, but can't find them on the web.

I'm afraid this could be the beginning of the end and I'll be forever modding my bike...

Shorter dog bones work for me, the steering is RGV quick and it only gets a slight weave after 120MPH. For track use I don't think this would be an issue.
Dunno about other technical stuff...

I've got rising plates on mine for the moment, till I get rearsets... I actually found it more comfortable than standard, though a giant would probably find it awkward. I'm 5'10.

For what its worth, I have both shorter dogbones, a ZX636 shock (a better shock and a bit longer) and gilles rearsets on my track bike and didn’t really struggle for ground clearance at Lydden

For information, I have stock shock, dogbones and footrests on my road bike and took the Gilles ones off that hence had them.

I see no disadvantage in doing the ZX636 shock and the dogbone conversion on your (predominately) road bike. But the rearsets on full adjustment might prove painful on long rides? Anyway, the Gilles rearsets like I have are fully adjustable, therefore one could adjust for road and track positions. Or you could have cheaper non-adjustable rearsets and swap over for trackdays.

By the looks of TSM’s Gilles rearsets, they can take a few knocks too

Did you see Andy's (weaselz) footpeg by the end of the day!? Despite just fitting it, he had ground half the thing off and not just the hero blob - the entire peg!

Not really helpful, but quite interesting!

There is some rather good footage of you digging your left hand footpeg down prey hard at the devlis elbow … was it the side stand too?? Whatever it was kicked the bike up … cool … all captured on Blue_Cam

screenshot ... you can see the tarmac dust as you ground in :-



Hopefully someone who I gave CDs of the footage too will edit (or at least compress with DivX or whatever) and host them so everyone can see

Oh and weaselz had the jack up plates fitted, and like you said, was griding them, so proof that if you want to get serious, proper rearsets are the only way

I use Valtermoto rearsets and jackup plates with Ohlins shock on max and shorter dogbones
I haven't touched the pegs yet, but do tend to make a mess of the side of my boots

You think my pegs were bad, you should've seen my pants!

(can't get my Mac to read the disc of footage, so I'm going to have a go tomorrow at work on a windows machine - hopefully will work and then I'll get it online )

I have walter-moto jack-up plates & I had a brand new double-hard (dhm) footpeg that I was grinding into the deck, in spite of being well hung-off & knee-down

saying that, yesterday was the furthest leant over I have been - still can't get that last 3mm of the bt-14's though

fortunately(?) my crash later in the day broke my left peg hanger, so I'm going to have to get something new, the walter moto's look the most sensibly priced, but don't really look like they'd crash too well

I do have a zx-10r shock to go on the back, which will hopefully raise that, so I can lose the drop I have on the front yokes...
