Radar gun reads 653 M.P.H

A Policeman trying out his newly accquired radar car speed indicator pointed it at a car and activated it.

He looked at the dial and it read 653 M.P.H.

What had happened was, he had pointed the instrument to high and read the speed of a passing Tornado Fighter jet.

The Tornado has an automatic defence system and detected the radar signal beamed at it. This caused the defence system to arm a missile, and aim it at the unsuspecting policeman.

The pilot spotted the problem and cancelled the missile launch just in time.

Interesting, but the story would have been better if the missile launch hadn't been cancelled...

I was going to say that the story had been floating around for sometime.. and was false.. mainly stated for the reasons given, but the glaring one was the sidewinder bit...

I heard a similiar story, bu it wasn't "friend of a friend" as usual, actually someone who claimed to have done it- he grew up in the Falklands after the war and claims they found an abandoned man-portable SAM launcer (without missiles) and used to use it as a "toy" gun. And that if you managed to get it just right, you could get the RAF (or would it be Navy? I forget) to take evasive action... Might be true, might not, but it's a nice story.
