Default EDIT... Thank you Sid - I have all gears now + end Photo

End result... = Claw and pin had stuck some how, when I removed the Clutch cage thats when I heard a click , and suspose that was the Claw relocating its self.
All back together now, with new oil filter, oil, coolant, plugs and such like.
and a rather nice looking clutch case... IMHO

Thank you to all for your advice, Now riden 60 miles at various speeds and no problems... touch wood.

Hi all, well this is my problem.
went out for a ride with my missus yesterday as parents had the kids ...
went up over toward Haws over Buttertubs then back via Richmond,..... very nice.

right then you get the picture.....

I experience a false neutral and just re-try for the same gear.. everything OK and we continue to ride along,
then about 20 miles later, as we overtake a van in 3rd gear I think, change up to 4th not a problem but then there might have been a click sort of felling from my foot as trying to get 5th... but nothing, no 5th ... starys in 4th, so we slow down to pull over, I change down to 3rd no problem, but pedal feels hard and does not self centre, just stays down,
On inspection, I see nothing amiss, no oil patch, we wait 5 minutes to check oil level and that's fine just under to full line.

when we finally get the bike home, I put it on the Abba stand and look more closely to see ... nothing wrong externally.

So I guess it an engine out and strip down then...

Still can only get 3rd & 4th , and the pedal stays in the lower (3rd) or upper (4th) position,

So what to you lot think, adjustment of linkage? or a snapped return spring or the fork selector stuck...
What do you think I should be looking for or trying first, and how much is a gasket / seal kit to split the engine?

Thank you in advance for any suggestion.
but I think it will be an engine strip down

Not exactly the same as what happened to me last year but I am leaning toward the return spring theory. Maybe Squiders will point you in a better direction. Hope it doesn't prove to be too much of a job or expensive to sort mate.

Probably not going to be this but...

Went out for a ride with Jase22 about 2 months ago and coming towards squires i needed to stop at trqaffic lights. Tried knocking it down from 4th and it wouldn't go lower than 3rd. Managed to set off from lights and get down to squires and step off bike after turning it off.

Turns out that the Bolt that holds the footpegs on had vibed itself loose and pushed against the gear lever. Tightened it back up and everything was hunky dory again

Probably not that though

I'd guess at the return spring being broken too. Confirm this by riding the bike and returning the lever manually with your foot - awkward but you'll work it out. If you can get all the gears that way then it's an external selector mechanism fault - of which a broken return spring is a good bet. Could be other things but when the mechanism is exposed it should soon be obvious.

Bad News: Spring is behind the clutch basket.

Good news: Motor doesn't have to come out, and it shouldn't be dear to fix, just a bit of a pain for such a cheap bit.

Thank you for your info,
Will start to strip it down and take photos as I go,
I do hope its not an engine out job...
Hopefully will get it fixed soon....

Thankx again

I had exactly this on my Kwak and it turned out to be crud in the left hand footpeg assembly stopping the gear lever pivoting smoothly so I was left with 1st, Neutral and 2nd. I'm not sure the SV suffers this as much as the kwak but if you undo the gear linkage from the gear lever and see if the lever moves smoothly it may help?
Only takes a couple of minutes to check.

Well, took it apart and split the gasket... Great start....
as you can see by the following photos as far as I can see all is as it is suspose to be...
BUT.....
when I stripped it all down it still only had 2 gears......
then i put a little resistence ( by that I mean three finger & thumb grip) to the clutch shaft and slowly turned the rear wheel in direction of travel and I heard something click into place and now have all my gears back....all up and down and Neutral...

God know what I've done but it seam to be working fine again... Bizzare....!!!

since the clutch cover is off now and mine is starting to corroid I'll smoth it off and respray it to make it look nice again. And waiting for the CLutch gasket to be ordered ffrom the dealers in Stockton.

Taken off the coolant hoses ... there you can see the corrosion on the Clutch cover under the oil filler.

Removed clutch springs, nothing looking too bad so far.

Gear Selector and return spring.... Still nothing to see....

arr well hopefully when it goes back together everything will still be okay.

My vote's still with the foot peg being gummed up with crud.

:Edit: Take the foot peg assembly appart, clean, re-grease & assemble.

ooo, shiney. Glad i have a curvey, you only have to take the clutch cover off

It could be the lever then. I know that they can have a habit of sticking, something to do with the inside of the lever. Well, im sure thats what Squid has said in the past.

Rich,

When you quit the army maybe you should consider a job as a photographer with Hayne's Manuals?
