Default IT question

I have 2MB broadband connection with Tiscali. I have been relatively happy with them apart from few minor issues. However my connection has been really slow recently (a week or so). It takes much longer to download pages and browsing is not as pleasant is it was before. Don’t take me wrong, it is still quick, but nowhere near what it was before. I play online games occasionally and I have noticed the ping has increased from average 30 to over 150 which in reality mean that plying on-line is impossible. Do you guys think it is the provider’s fault or more likely something to do with the BT line? What should I do? Will changing provider make it better? I don’t really know where to start and what to check first. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Do you have a monthly usage allowance???

Unlimited is not always that unlimited!

I hit that problem while playing online games, used my 2GB a month up very quickly.

Have you got a Wireless network ?

If yes is it secure ? -> you might have neighbours sucking your internet dry

Any p2p programs running in the background ?

Try a program like netlimiter that monitors your network traffic. - you will see if there are any programs in the background using your internet connection.

Do a:

Start

Run...

cmd (enter)

ping www.google.com

& then

tracert www.google.com

& post results please.

Have you got up-to-date spyware software on your machine? i.e. Spysweeper from http://www.webroot.com/

Dunno if it's related to your problem but if you don't the spyware on your machine could be using up your connection...

No I don't have wireless. Old fashioned cables. I have reasonable reliable antivirus and some spyware detecting programs too. Run it overnight ... nothing. Clear as ever. It did go better once but got worse again.

I had a problem with web pages being slow, incomplete, or not loading at all if refreshed... tried all the antispy, virus etc etc etc for a couple of months, but found nothing.
On Orange AKA Wannadoo AKA Freeserve!

All sorted with an XP reinstall though!
