Default new clothing screwing up my riding

As a relative newbie I thought people might be able to share there experiences in coping with new boots and gloves. I had to take my Bullson boots back to Hein Gericke as the zip ripped off. I decided to trade up to some Alpinestars ones (can't remember the model) and some HG goretex gloves. Previously I've been riding around in mountain biking gloves which are very thin. I'm now really struggling to control the bike as I can't feel either the gear lever or the handlebars. I'm having probs missing gear changes and not being able to tell what gear I'm in! It's quite frustrating...

You'll get used to it. You'll be thankful when you go sliding down the road.

Hey, take it from an old hand it doesn't get any better!

Nah, it does - kinda.

You've got to be comfortable to ride at your best - and like most things it's, you're lucky to fint kit that fits 'just right' first time. So a little breaking in is needed here and there - as long as there's no real 'discomfort' then you'll get used to your kit.

It;'s at that point that things don't get better over time - you get your gloves all nice and snug n comfy...

... well, so that they fit like a glove and then they wear out and you need to get a new pair.

Even if you get exactly the same make (hey, I have done that thing of finding something really comfy and so bought two at once ) it feels wierd for a little bit.

Wear you boots round the house n stuff to get used to the way you feel information through them. As for your gloves - well, everyone has to get used to big ol' fat sausage fingers this time of year. :P
(Or get heated gloves!)

Things break in and you get used to it, don't discount the idea of adjusting position of levers to help. When I first got my last 2 sets of boots I couldn't feel the back brake at all, but got used to it, the fact there's a bit more remoteness is partly due to the fact they're stiffer and tougher. Partly just because they're new.

Oh, I absolutely HATE thick gloves and prefer to ride around in less thick glove come winter and suffer with blue pinkies...ya can always stop and warm yer fingers up somewhat......
A trick I learnt many many moons ago was to buy a set of all leather boots slightly too small (say half a size), put on a pair of your normal riding socks and then put cling film or similar over your sock and slide the boots on and wear em around the house, go shopping with the missus and walk the dog in them and after a couple of days your new boots should fit like a glove......pun intended

I always feel a bit like you describe when I first wear winter gloves at the end of the summer - you will get used to it though. If you still find them uncomfortable after a few weeks riding, they may just be uncomfortable gloves. If so, change them. As mentioned, it's best to be comfortable so you can concentrate on the important stuff.

If its any consolation my oxtar boots are still ****ing stiff as a board and i've been wearing them all summer. Short of wearing them in the bath I can't get used to them.

Gloves - easy fix, Buy a size too big and use lightweight cotton golves on the inside.

Or live and ride in Scotland cos we're hard as nails and dont feel the cold.

Getting correctly fitting gear is very important, especially if/when you have an accident. It takes a while breaking in new gear, give it a week or so and if you are still having problems, take the gear back and get something different.

Personally I dislike thick winter gloves, I don't like the way I feel almost disconnected to whats going on with the bike. I've now got a pair of winter Racer gloves. They are almost as thin as summer gloves and yet 100% waterproof and nice and warm. Unfortunately I suffer from cold hands so in winter I usually wear a pair of silk inner gloves too.
