Default Horrible sounds coming off front pot

The other day during/ end of a heated ride my bike started to make a very unnerving noise.

Doing liscence losing speeds shall we say i knocked into 6th and heard a kind of metal on metal slap if you like, But at the same time something hit my boot so i looked down and kept accelerating. after realising it was still there i clutched it and coasted home about 1/2 mile.

So first job: check the plugs are tight and in working order, both are fine and the mixture looks to be pretty good judging by the plug colour ( lightish grey colour) so there's nothing amiss there.

Cam Tensioners: Removed them and both seemed to return to full length fine after winding and releasing the mechanism. the front came out without the rod forcing it against the screws but the rear was pushed out as you undid the bolts. Both however needed to be fully wound in to get them back in place.

The noise is still there after this.

The best i can describe it is as if the piston is striking the head with a big sort of metal on metal slapping noise. It seems to be coming from the front pot only for the time being but sounds low down.

Bit of background then. The oil is changed every 3000-3500 miles as are plugs and filters. The oil is checked daily although it has a slight leak on the clutch housing side.

It has a De-snorked filter and 147.5 Mikuni's in and as said appears spot on with the plug colour.

There is compression on both the front and rear as air is being forced out of the plug holes when i remove the plug so hopefully the pistons intact.

The noise is not there on idle ( 1500rpm) nor is it upto 4000rpm ish if raised gradually. once past 4000rpm ish or if blipped then it is easy heard over the exhaust and not very pleasant. It does this in every gear and neutral so i don't think it's a gearbox issue.

So folks....any ideas ??? Cams jumped out of sync ? Big end dead ?

REALLY wanting to avoid garage as i can't afford £100 before they look at it

First thing I would do is drain the oil through a strainer to see if there are any metal particles or fragments in the crank case.

Head EDIT! HEAD COVER! off, check out the valves, turn the engine over from the crank with a big socket wrench, see what they do. Check the timing. All pretty easy stuff, we're talking 4 bolts here See if the cam chain seems loose too- comparing with the rear would be helpful.

This is all elimination stuff tbh, I'm not convinced it'll be any of that, but you need to "eliminate it from your enquiries".

Does it feel down on power? Any misfires or hesitation?

TBH i only rode it for a VERY ginger 1/2 mile when it started so i'm not sure about loss of power. There doesn't seem to be any hesitation when revving on the stands but the rad was off to get easy access to front pots and i don't wnat to run it too long so it was on choke anyway.

So sundays list goes like this

1, Tensioners out again and check front with back
2, Check Valve timing (any info welcome as i only have B&W and they aint very clear)
3, Drop oil out and check for shrapnel
4, Hit it with a mallet till it works or breaks

Any indication as to how to look for wear on the cam chains ? been told it may be that the cam chain has gone too loose (i.e past adjustment) or the tensioners jammed and it's jumped a tooth or 2 on the cam sprock (?) which would cause the valve to be hitting the piston top and possibly bending explaining the ugly noise

I bent my valves recently.

The bike sounded fine on idle but as the revs rose, you would hear it, louder and louder, the metal clatter. Not a nice noise thats for sure.

Anyways...my experience was two bent valves. I'd take the spark plugs out and push the bike about in top gear. If there is resistance at some point, quite a bit of resistance then chances are the cam lobes are hitting the buckets prematurely and too much. Of course, could be anything but sounds remarkably like mine. Give it a go anyway.

6th gear, no sparks, look for ease of pushing then some amount of resistance....once past the resistance it should be easy to push about again.

Taking the head off is very easy and can be done without much bother. That allows you to test if any of the valves are indeed bent (shine light through it and see if any leaks or you could do the same with a liquid so I believe. If you want pages of the haynes manual scanned in to assist you, let me know.

WHOOPS! I typed "head" where I meant to type "Valve cover" Apologies for that! Heads off would be for later down the line really.

I've been keeping an eye on your post after reading the first few. Does sound remarkably similar don't it. Looks like we'll be fighting for heads off fleabay

Take it it'll need a gasket set if i remove the head. I spun the wheel on the paddock stands and there is definate resistance so far round but i thought this was normal Looks like i best strip her down again.

Try:

http://www.robinsonsfoundry.co.uk/

Though you'll have to ring them up. Haven't heard of the other 2 but M&P and Busters seem to sell accessories rather than spares.

Busters and M&P both do gasket kits for most bikes including GSXR, Bandit etc. but none listed for SV

Gonna call into the stealership at dinner
