Default SV650S vs SV1000S

Please could someone tell me what insurance group the 2 bikes are respectively, and what differences there are (if any) other than the engine?

Also, what is the step-up in power between them - I'm not sure the bhp of either bike?

Finally, would an SV1000S be too much for a post-DAS first bike?

Thanks

Not certain of insurance groups, however the cost to insure a SV1000 as a post-das bike is likely to be horrendous!

Very few components are shared (screen, seats, tank but not much else)

SV1000 has around 110bhp, SV650 around 75

I had a curvy 650 as my first bike, and kept it for 4 years - I learnt a hell of lot on it, and had a few close shaves that I got away with.

The 1000 is a different beast altogther. I have had mine for nearly 3 years and it is a hell of a lot different to the 650 to me - nowhere near as nimble, it neads to be 'muscled' into corners. Once you have chosen your line however, it is a lot more stable due to the extra weight and better suspension. The brakes are also excellent, as opposed to the ones on the 650 which are 'adequate'.

The grunt of the 1000 makes it much easier to get up to silly speeds (I saw 135 maxed out on my 650, 150 on the 1000 still had 2200 revs to go).

I would recommend the 650 over a 1000 for the following reasons:-

  • 650 is more nimble
    650 is cheaper to insure
It is easier to get in to trouble on a 1000
650s hold their value better so if you get bored with it after a year you shouldn't lose as much money

HTH

Ive only had my 1000 for a few weeks but I'll try and help, the 650s is a group 9 or 10 and the 1000 is a 14 i think after the first ride on the 1000 it felt just like the 650 except for heaver steering because of the steering damper, after riding it more you can feel how much better the brakes are and the suspension feels more solid.
as for differences between the two brakes and suspension as mentioned, hydraulic clutch, fatter back tyre 180 instead of 160, bigger radiator and oil cooler, heaver,115 bhp instead of 70 bhp, faster, uses more fuel, twin exhausts, stronger swing arm, steering damper, wider bars, chain adjusters.
I'll have to go into the garage and have a closer look

How come you got a heaver with yours - I didn't get one with mine

Good to hear that you are starting to notice the differences now

New type - got them from the NEC last year, paid about £75 IIRC - looked everywhere for a discount but nowhere seems to discount them at all

i got the old type with the bar that goes through the engine but the previous owner has tightened it too much and threaded the bar, i got a new bar from R&G but i haven't fitted it yet and was just wondering how much to tighten it without damaging the new bar.

been out and done 20 or so miles on the sv1000s tonight in the cold and damp with the gritters out! ive noticed that the 1000 doesn't smooth out like the 650 prob because you are reving higher on the 650 and the 1000 doesn't need to be rev'd i saw 75 in second and 90 in third man that thing pulls and pull and pulls! its going to be very easy come the summer to get into trouble on that thing back to the lumpy v twin feel, it feels like a v twin evan at high speeds where as the 650 gets smooth the faster you go
