... sat about being lazy today - mainly watching a load of Ray Harryhausen films on SciFi channel.

I watched these as films as a kid and they still hold the same appeal.

It's the quality of the stop motion animation - none of this CGI ****e.

AWESOME - The King of Culcis is just about to raise the Children of the Hydra's Teeth - sword-fighting skeletons a go-go.

Is it just me, or does anyone else still hanker for animatronics over CGI?

(Yeah yeah, so I can now have the laptop on whilst sitting on the sofa watching TV. Hee hee.)

Animation or real stuntmen over CGI every time.

Those skeleton scenes must have taken ages (stop frame animation like Wallace and Grommit)

Watched Clash of the titans this afternoon on my desktop, this USB digital dongle is great. only trouble ive got is the daughters nicked the amplified ariel for the digibox I used to have in here so have lost half the channels. Have to go shopping tomorrow now.

The stop-motion skeletons are absolutely fantastic... Modelwork still dates better than CGI I reckon.

Got to agree with you K. Stop frame animations like Wallace and Gromit and The Magic Roundabout have a certain "warmth" to them that you just don't get with CGI. You can really appreciate the time and skill that went into making them. Whereas with CGI you just guess that its some geek spending moths in front of a computer screen. (thank god I dropped out of that college coarse

)
Me and a mate made a few stop frame animations when we were younger just using still frames from a webcam and some print-outs for back drops

Very basic but a lot of fun

I am actually sad enough to watch the 'Monster Making' documentarys on most DVD's. I was impressed by the sentiments shown when they were making Underworld: Evolution...

... they were adamant that there was as much real werewolves n stuff as possible - and the masks n prosthetics n stuff were awesome. Huge models too rather than greenscreen a lot of action.

With the quality that computer's can reproduce I'm not sure i actually makes a difference sometime with what you see on the screen - but it sure as hell makes a difference with the actor's performances. Somuch more genuine when they really do have some hairy, slavering creature to interact with.

I'll take animation over CGI anyday... it has its places, but CGI can ruin a film.. look at the newer star wars.. a lot of stuff was way over the top with the CGI.... people cant even be bothered in building sets for a damned room anymore... just green screen everything.. even the insides of the space ships were CGI'd..

animations and models at the end of the day are real things, they look much more real than CGI when it comes people or monsters, and sometimes spaceships.. damned Red Dwarf for switching to CGI!! half the fun was watching a spaceship dangling from strings and sloppy explosions!
