Default If i was to buy a cheap off road bike

Which one should i go for?

I think ive got the bug for it, but im wondering how i could afford it. I dont think ill need anything bigger than 125 at this point in time, cos ive got no experience (except for 15 mins at the NEC) and wouldnt want something that would be snatchy on the muddy stuff. As i dont have the car, or a trailer for towing, i would like something roadworthy. Am i better off getting a trailer and getting something purely off road focused?

Anyone go offroading around the North?

If I was you i'd set a budget of about £1500, spend about a grand on a 125 YZ or CR, and spend £500 on a trailer, lid, boots and a few other body armour bits.

That way if you don't really get on with it you won't loose too much cash but if you do, you might want to by a bigger bike after a few months so you can buy a brand new one then...

id get a late 90's say 97 or 98 suzuki rm125 as its still the most fun ive ever had on a bike. awesome toy and it stood up to more than my body could take, i broke 4 ribs, punctured a lung and snapped my spine on one and it still works to this day, all i did was dent the front wheel and bend the forks. fantastic bike hard as nails and goes like the clappers. If you want a less zingy bike id say an early yamaha yz426 althought they are a pig to get started with all the different levers and stuff or if you want stupid power then a xr650, i used to race enduro in the states on one and it was solid as a rock but way to tall for a short ass like me (5'8" and i had to drop it 4 inches just to touch the ground). my mate has a some road legal 250 honda thing and on my 97 rm125 i still kick his ass round all the tracks and when we are green laning it.

If you just want to blat round the woods then I'd get either a CR125 or RM125. If you want to try greenlaning then you may want something with a bit of grunt. Try a DR350 or a CRF230. I can personally vouch for a DR350. They're about the best all rounder to start your off road life on. Plenty of torque, and usable power.

HTH.

I've got a near perfect as you'll find DR350 about to be advertised, but its a bit far for you I think.
