Default air filter cleaning?

Hi all,

I’m half way through cleaning my K&N air filter & getting a little confused by the instructions , from what I can see it seems the “clean/dirty” sides of the air filter in the diagrams in the instructions are the other way round from what I thought would be the “clean/dirty” sides of my SV air filter.

So my questions:

a) Which side of the air filter is the “clean” side & which is the “dirty” side of the SV air filter?

b) Which side should I spray the oil?

Cheers,

Gaz

Better wait for confirmation off someone else (I haven't had to clean mine yet) but the dirty side would face up towards the top of the air box. I would've thought the oil goes on this side too.

Dirty side is on the top where the outside air comes in. Clean side is the bottom, throttle body side.

Oh and oil on dirty side to attract the dirt. Not too much though or it will clog up too quickly.

So just to confirm; the "inside" as it were, of the air filter is the dirty side? this is what i thought to be be the case, but on the diagrams it seems t'other way round.

Does your filter look like this? If so then the dirty side is what you can see. Inside is the clean side where the cleaned air goes to your carbs.

Hope that clears it up for you

First of all, is it a curvy or pointy model filter? Filter shown is for curvy and side shown is the CLEAN side. ON ordinary curvy filters you would blow compressed air in from this side to drive the crap back to the outside. Picture the filter in the housing and you will see which side the air is sucked in. The INSIDE is the opposite side to that.

Pointys have a flat filter. The dirty side is the side facing away from the engine.

Hope that helps

Just checked Haynes and John is right I was kinda right but wrong Clean side showing in pic. Clean air is carb side tho I gotta pointy and should have looked at the pic of the curvey airbox first.

For curvy:
Spray cleaner onto it on the outside.
Let it do it's work or summat like that.
Hose off from the inside(shower head/tap/etc)
Leave to dry
Re-oil
Done.

Thanks all. So it was the way round I thought it was, but you guys have confirmed.

It’s a curvey that I’ve got, I got as for as rinsing it out from the inside & letting it dry, but it doesn’t specify which side to spray the oil, I would’ve thought the dirty side but it’d be quite difficult to get the oil aerosol in there & give it a thorough coating? Or doesn’t it matter as that they haven’t said which side?

Cheers
