Default Insurance for European Rider

A guy at Lissa's work place has just bought an 04 SV650.

Anybody had any dealings with insurance companies who insure guys with foreign licences. This chap is Polish. Can he get online quotes or does he have to talk to somebody?

Is a Polish licence valid over here? There was a guy doing his CBT at the same time as me who had hada foreign licence for 3 years but it wasn't valid over here so had to do the CBT and full test before be could legally go out on the road.

I assumed it was as they are part of EU now. Anybody sure what the law is?

A polish CAR licence is valid for 2 years here but he will have to take the full UK test after that.

Dunno about Mo'sickles but maybe same...just phone and ask.

Lissa googled and come up with this.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...nce/DG_4022562

It seems any EU member country citizen now resident in the UK can apply for an "exchange" UK licence without having to retake tests.

Best quote so far is £300 with Bennets

What you also need to find on the DVLA site is that ANY person who has a license issued by an EU country can drive int he UK with their EU license

So he doesn't need to change his license. How many insurance comps will accept it though is a different story

If you have a valid community licence, this will authorise you to drive in GB for the period set out below. Alternatively, you can exchange your licence for a British one at any time.

Provided your licence remains valid you may drive in GB:
Car, motorcycle driving licence holders (ordinary driving licence):

* until aged 70 or for three years after becoming resident, whichever is the longer period

Thanks for the advice about motorcycle direct. Just had Adi round here and got him sorted through them.

No probs Lissa - glad I could help

It's always a bit hard to find a comp that will not rip you off and insure you as well
