I got my younger son set up via a wireless connection in his room. His older brother has the same wireless adapter and it works fine from the bedroom next door. I can pick up the wireless network with a good signal but can't connect through to the internet.
I'm on NTL via a cable/DSL connection through the set-top box. Do I need to run the broadband installer program on the extra computer or should it just pickup the settings from the computer downstairs, which is connected via wire? Any advice welcomed Cheers Keith |

I don't know tht setup, but is there any security running ? have you got WEP or/and secure MAC running ?
Generally if you are receiving a good signal strength, but are unable to get on, there are only two reasons, the first you have the wrong network name , or security isn't setup correctly. Cheers Mark

AFAIK if you are using a PC with a wireless card to share an internet connection, it's possible it will only be able to connect to one other PC at a time, as it is a direct device-to-device connection. I think if you want to share the internet connection with more than 1 PC wirelessly, you will need to have a wireless router that acts as an access point. If you already have a wireless router, ignore the above ![]() |

Mark - don't think there is a problem with the security as it is allowing me to connect to the router.
El Saxo - yes - I have a separate router. The PC downstairs is connected to the cable / DSL wireless router. I can connect both my laptop and my older son's PC no problem, but this second PC will just not connect through to the internet. I suspect it must be something wrong with the browser settings but I can't figure it out. Thanks for he comments anyway. Cheers Keith |

get the computer thats not doing as it should, then try opening internet explorer, goto tools > internet options > connections > LAN settings, and make sure "automatically detect network settings" is checked.

All the above are good solutions.
I've also seen a setup before where the users thought that the same WEP key would work over multiple machines. It doesn't. Ensure that your wireless network is secure, and each machine has it's own key, because that can cause the symptoms you've described. |
