Converting an import?? - SV650.org

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to convert an imported vespa from KPH to MPH, my mate bought one from switzerland and its just failed on the fact it has no number plate light ( easyish fix I think

) and its in KPH, anyone out there with any ideas coz he's well ****ed off with himself for gettin it now??

There's bound to be a fix for Vespas, they used to be a really popular import... Is it a recent model or a classic?

Which Vespa did he get mate? is it a PX (old style with gears in hand) or an automatic plastic one?

speedos are readily available and very easy to swap

Cheers guys,

Its a 1999 ET2 50cc model, I've just been out with him and we've managed to get into the speedo by dismantling the main head of it and it looks like we have to replace the whole shibang (speedo/gas/indies/brake the lot?) Could be more expensive than I was thinkin now we've had a look at it??

I believe the legal requirement is a device that shows when you are doing 30 mph or something similar to that.If you mark the existing speedo that point it will cover that.My SV is a euro import and has an overlay on the KPH dial and has never had a problem at MOT.Having said that,is your scooter a moped?If so it should be restricted to 30 anyway,and I don't think it requires a speedo at all???

to pass an MOT, all you need is to have marker stickers on the speedo.

If you can't get an overlay, just get some of the 30mph/50mph/70mph arrow ones (most importers will have them/ I used to get mine from BAT motorcycles), then bench mark the speeds with someone else with a UK speedo.

Rictus, do you know where I could get my hands on off those overlays? I've had a look on bat motorcycles website but didnt get any joy.. also if I did get my hands on one of these I take it I would need a convertor going into the speedo end or the wheel end like this one off ebay?

I think your problem is that the speedo is not "SHOWING" in miles.......in which case I suggest you ring up a vespa place and they will defo be able to sort u out with sthing similar to a sticker
