Default Islington Parking's Citizens' Panel

Guess who's on it?

In my application I said that

" I have observed and been affected by what I would consider to be inappropriate practice in parking enforcement and would like to use this experience to inform a fair and reasonable process for both residents and parking enforcement contractors. My particular areas of interest are motorcycle parking, disabled parking, and visitor parking"

Happy to take up any issues you lot want to chuck in.

Debs

I'll take these to the council myself, but you may be interested...

1) Removal of motorcycle parking bay on Highbury Crescent, opposite the swimming pool. This had ground anchors and was a good sized bay which received constant use on weekends, especially match days. It's now been removed, and single-yellow-lined. Why?

2a) Access passes for residents of roads closed when Arsenal are playing at home, are not automatically issued to holders of resident parking permits - they must be applied for separately. Why? This stinks of inefficiency.

2b) Why should these access permits necessarily have a vehicle's registration number on them - if you live there, you should be allowed access to your property whatever vehicle you are in!

2c) The access permits themselves are too favoured for cars - why can they not be incorporated into the standard parking permit? Presenting the access permit when on a bike is not an easy thing to do if we're expected to keep the large square document in our pocket/wallet etc.

3) The cost of visitors permits is prohibitively expensive.

4) The queues at the Islington Parking office just off Milner Square are rediculous - a minimum of two clerks is clearly not adequate.

5) Is the huge number of Parking Attendents proportional to the "income" that they generate?

That should get things started!

thanks

we met for the first time this evening and told them one or two things about themselves, including some of the specifics you mention. I also included the chestnuts 'where do you put a parking permit on a bike without it falling off/getting nicked?' as well as 'why is the bike bay on my road right on the corner and encompasses a drain hole on a camber?'. not ot mention the over-zealous parknig attendants and the woes of getting a permit when you're moving house or buying a new car.

We were actually supposed to be advising on the 'important' issues that are going to be in the new contract. what we realised tonight is that they intended to go out to tender for a new 10-year contract next month! There are lots of policy issues that need resolving before they go through the procurement process. So having voiced a load of quite reasonable gripes, our advice to them was to extend the existing contract (short term pain) until the policy has been sorted, then re-tender (long term gain).

carts and horses....
(ponies and traps!)

BTW, I now have a hotline to both the head of the parking department and the councillor responsible for parking.
