As we all know riding a bike is a risky business. I often get asked why would you want to ride a bike when it can be so dangerous.
I have always tried to discribe how riding a bike makes you feel, and why I cant stop wanting to jump on the bike as soon as i can. For me (and my wife will confirm this) it has become an obsession. I cant stop myself, i just want to be out on the bike at every oportunity. But i cant seem to put into words how it feels, so that people understand. Can any of you put the feeling the bike gives you into words? Last edited by Sid Squid; 20-02-07 at 01:38 PM. |

'Cos it feels good. There really isn't any more to it than that.
There are clearly some incidental benefits, but they realistically could be from belonging to any group that enjoys a relatively minority and non mainstream activity - most people don't ride bikes.

What Mr Squid says - it feels good. As simple as that.

I think there is more to it. I like the feeling of pushing myself further and further closer to my limits. I like the sensation of well-taken corners, good overtakes, well-timed filtering etc. I like looking after my bike, as I am proud of it. I like the feeling when all the worries in your life just count for nothing when you are riding your bike on your favourite stretch of road.

![]() There is an element of pride of having ridden well, smoothly, fast but under control. the bike offers much more freedom than a car, it's more responsive to your own reactions - quick acceleration and braking - it is your whole self, mind and body that controls the bike. In the car it is your hands and feet (and mind, a bit!) only. BUT the best thing is that it requires full concentration. So should a car but most don't give 50% with a car. You have no option with a bike. Because of that you release your mind of everything else, all your hassles and so on. the combination of it all just feels great - even better when your out with a couple of mates. ![]() |

Spend a week on a ward full of old men with dicky tickers. Suddenly you realise there is more to life than work, home and families. The pressure of modern life can kill you.
That is why I went back to biking. On a bike I am to busy trying to make sure white van man, Mr BMW et al don't kill me, that I forget about everything else that is trying to kill me.

The feeling of getting away with it. The balance of right and wrong and sitting on that edge of right with the occassional shift into wrong. The decisions you make of keeping or putting you in that position and how long the concentration can be sustained to keep you there. You can choose to stay in the middle of this balance or shift to right and left in a fraction. Its that change that keeps life on a bike interesting for me.

I've got a nasty feeling this quote comes from an old Harley advert but it's true in spite of that...
If you have to explain it to someone, then they'll never understand. |
