Default And relax...

Well, as some of you have seen on the forum, there was a possibility of me going overseas this weekend.

As one or two know at least, if I'd of been away for the time I reckon the issue would of taken to resolve to the client's satisfaction (worst case scenario). That would be 25 days. My sons birthday on 16th March. Do the maths, I wouldn't of been here for it

All through this, the client has been blaming our company, our company have been blaming them, stalemate. As a gesture of goodwill, our directors offered to help out, because someone needed to give first.

The problem? Well, our directors agreed to something they knew nothing about. Oh joy. It turns out that there's only a handful of people in the company that actually know anything about the situation, how the app is being used, what hardware it's running on, how to even use the hardware, or the operating system etc etc. As is standard practice here, no-one was talking to each other, so each person only had a small bit of the puzzle. Between everyone, it wasn't enough to get the issue resolved, no-where near it. Yet the board of directors basically said "Yes, we know all about that, we can do that no problem." I won't comment on my opinion about that statement, but anyone who works in IT knows the feeling well.

Pretty much everyone in the company had a crack at this that could, but people were only told on a need to know basis. If the bosses don't think you know it, they never bother to ask.

I found out this Monday morning in a meeting, and voiced my opinions. At that stage, the client was looking at pulling the contract completely, and throwing $400million down the drain, because that would be more cost efficient that struggling with a system that doesn't work. It turns out that my opinion of the fault, just volunteered me for the last life line of the project, with 7 days to go, and coming into the project almost blind. Aint I a lucky bugger?

Anyhow, cutting to the chase a little. I've been messing around doing various things over the last week, but before I do anything on their network/servers, I have to call to get permission, which only serves to waste what I see as valuable time, but the client demands to be kept in the picture at all times, so this is what we do.

I've just found out now that because performance has "significantly improved" that the client is happy to limp along with this very expensive, very inefficient project, and give us a little more time to get things running.

Why have they been oh so gracious?

The faults were down to their OS choice, not giving us the specs & asking if it would be OK to run, not setting up the OS properly, not setting up the network properly (inc using dodgy CAT6 cables), not setting our app up properly, etc etc. It was me & the 2 other guys that could of been going over with me that discovered this within the last few days. Resolve all of this, and as you would expect, performance returns.

This meant that DB queries on a Windows sever took 1min30 to return & get rendered to the user screen. On the Solaris server, it took 7mins45, if it didn't time out, which about 40% of the time it did.

We're a software house, networking isn't our issue. I also have just found out as I'm writing this, that the client's entire DBA team have either left the company, or are on holiday. !)%*£)£$&()£"*$*%£^!"£()*£%_£($"£^

Right, now I think I need a stiff drink...

I think that they looked at an aeronautics quiz on here and realised that they'd met their match
