Default Flames !!!

A few of us spent the day working on our mates MGB doing a few jobs on it. At the end of the day we decided to take it for a spin to see if it was running better. So me and and another mate jumped on our bikes (he's got a bandit) and followed the MGB out to an arranged stopping place. Everything was fine, so we decided to race off on the bikes. By now it was dark. When we got home my mate on the bandit kindly informed me that my SV throws out bright blue flames on the overrun!!!!!

Nice, you must hear it popping and banging as well? Means your over fuelling, but who cares!

Cool!

I've heard that the popping and banging is caused by it being lean/exhaust blowing?

The popping and banging is normally caused by the system running lean, but when you back off the throttle the fuel isn't completely shut off. Because you are normally running lean, exhaust gas temperatures are higher, so when the 'overrun' fuel gets into the exhaust it can then ignite.

On our race car we actually just cut the spark when you first back off the throttle to help cool the pistons and improve the throttle repsonse - you get wicked flames out of that. We made some last minute changes the night before the event at Silverstone and we were sat in the pit lane in the dark checking the car out. Another team were doing the same and we had a 'flame-off' in the pit lane. Looked fantastic seeing the two cars lighting up the night with 2 foot long electric blue flames shooting out of the back!!!

My old beetle used to do this too. It had 2 exhausts that used to flame at night. Nice.
