Default Bike wont start with new battery

Hello,
Im new to the forum but have looked at alot of the other posts about this and havent really found a fix yet. Just bought a 2000 SV650s that seems to be in really good shape. The guy I bought it off of had it running and we road it before I bought it but it had a bad battery. So I bought a new battery, charged it, made sure 6 times that the terminals are tight and I still cant get it to start. My question is what are the different switches that would bother the ignition and make the bike not start? Ive held the clutch in and put the kickstand up and even tried putting the seat back on and sat on it too... All I get when I turn the key is a buzz and the lights on the cluster fade then when I let off they come back on. Anyone have any other ideas of things I can try? Even just so I can get it fired up enough to make it to a shop?
thanks in advance

Have you checked that you have not knocked the kill switch? (big red button next to throttle?
Is the battery connected the right way round? i.e. +ve on battery to +ve on bike?

well your obviously getting power, so its nothing to do with your new battery. Just make sure
1. In neutral
2. Sidestand is up
3. Clutch is in
4. Killswitch is off

whereabouts are you located?

I'm no mechanic but it sounds like a starter motor problem that my neighbour had on his car, I assume bikes have a similar set up. You are obviously getting power through to the start switch as when you try it is draining juice from lights etc.

Try to bump the bike in gear - with a car this can release a stuck on starter motor.

Is it possible that the new battery is not holding its charge (faulty) and that there has not been a second immobiliser fitted? Check the kill switch, side stand switch and clutch switch are all working also.

It's worth noting the the headlights on a pointy SV (and Gixer for that matter) are extinguished when the starter button is pressed even when the kill switch is off.

If the above are OK it might be worth checking the solenoid (follow the thick cable from the starter motor) that is connected to the handle bar switch.

You say it makes a buzz when you turn the key? Are you sure you dont mean when you hit the starter button? If so, and with the lights fading, its a battery issue. The buzz is because the battery doesnt have enough joice to hold the starter solenoid open, letaknown turn the motor. What type of battery is it? Is it fully charged (doesnt sound it)? Also if its an acid battery did you fill it correctly with acid and leave it on trickle charge for a while?

My sv does this at the moment, batterys shagged, I just jump from a car.

try bypassing the clutch switch incase its corroded...
i.e. the electrical connector under the clutch lever on the left handgrip...unplug it and check for corrosion..if so clean it...and lube with grease then re-attach...hth

Shouldn't be that, that'd prevent it from even trying to start so no dimming of lights etc. Not sure what it is, though.

I appologize your absolutly right it makes the buzz when I hit the starter switch not when I turn the key (wrote the post before I went to work and wasnt awake yet.) It is a brand new Everstart Maxx and I did mix the acid and let it sit on the trickle charger on 2v for 9-10 hours. One other thing I did not say is that the key is hard to turn on sometimes because the cable adjuster on the clutch is broken but I just ordered a new one. Does that control the actual safty mechanism on the bike?
