Default RAC: Am I covered?

Hi all,

While hurtling along the M42 towards Birmingham the other day it occured to me(as it does!) that although me and SWMBO have joint RAC cover what would the man in the orange van say if he turned up and saw my SV instead of the VW? Would he laugh in my face or am I covered on the bike?

I know its supposed to be the person, not the vehicle, thats covered, but does anyone have experience of this?

If not can you point me in the direction of someone who does bike breakdown cover?

Mucho Gracias

Gordon

When I first got the bike I phoned the RAC to see if it was also covered - and it was.

I'd phone and check with them but i'm 99% sure that you are covered on the bike. I took out AA cover because they cover me in or on any vehicle.

im pretty sure youre covered,
but most of the major "car" breakdown companies are pretty crap for bikes from what ive seen, they usually just send a local bike recovery firm to bring you home.
judging by the state of most of the contractors that work for the majors with car recovery, i wouldnt want the same caliber of bike ones to touch my machine..........,

I have had the AA out to both the bike and the car this year.

No batting of eyelids or anything else.

My daughter, who is at uni and cant drive and does not have a car, is an AA member and can call them out if a vehicle she is in breaks down.

(Befor anyone says Iam mad - the fourth memeber on a family membership is FREE! so this extra cover costs me nothing)

HTH

Quick heads up for those with AA membership..................as far as I'm aware they will not recover you after an accident, even if the accident isn't your fault. This has happened twice in the last six months that we know of.

I used the RAC to take my bike to the local bike shop last week. They used a massive truck with a special bike carrying attachment (all RAC trucks carry them, thoiugh if they sub the job out to a garage they don't have to use them) and they're starting to get proper bike trailers for all of their smaller vans too.

Make sure you explain to the operator clearly that it needs picking up and that it can't be fixed (if that's the case) or else you'll get a standard van and have to wait longer for a proper truck.

Although they don't advertise it you can also state when calling them that you want the RAC to come, not a subcontractor; they have to do that if you specifically ask for it.

And bear in mind that you still need the right package - they won't come to your house to take the bike to your local garage if you don't have 'home start' or whatever they call it... you'll have to push it at least a mile away first.

Touch wood I've never had to use my AA cover for the Bike, only the car - but when I joined and asked if both were covered they did also remind me to clearly state it was for a motorbike breakdown if I needed to phone them. That way yeah, you get the right truck our first time.

Having basic cover when you don't have a vehicle or can't drive isn't as darft as it sounds. Espescially if all your mates are poor students with crappy cars!
