Default need some help with my 454ltd

So I got this 1986 kawasaki 454ltd to hold me over till I fix my sv650. Am supposed to sell it today, and it dies on me last night. Just wanted to get some advice before I call my mechanic.

I was driving it around all week just fine. Well, on my way home last night the throttle started acting a little funny. It seemed to lose power then if I turn it more it'd boost it back up. After about a minute of that, I slowed down and it died. I had to turn it on full choke for it to start again. If I turned choke down it died again. I was only a block from home so I barely made it. After I got there, it became harder and harder to start with each try. Now it won't start at all. It's been progressively worse sounding when I hit the start button, too. Oil is good; battery is new. Not sure what else to check.

Thanks fellas

Alek

Sounds like you throttle linkage is loose, if you needed choke to start a hot engine, then it's not getting the fuel it needs.

I think this is a carb model so check the idle stop(s) down by the carbs and the throttle cable adjuster as well, you'll probbly find a loose connection there, tighten this up and it should fix it.

Cheers Mark.

Holy ****! You were right

I was afraid I'm gonna have to waste money fixing this thing before I fixed my curvy. The box into which the throttle cable connects had a crack in it; it musta happened when the bike fell over (it was really windy here one day). I adjusted it, and it sounds great now.

Thanks mate!!

Leads me to suspect something else is playing up, go back to basics, check for fuel, spark, air then timing.

I'd try first off starting the bike with my hand controlling the throttle (at the carbs) if it starts and runs OK then it will be the linkage and may need anew cable, you could also have a knackeredchoke cable/plunger?

Perhaps this will asist you

Well if it "cured" it for even a short time, you must be in the right area. And Mark's right, if you need the choke on a hot engine, it has fuel issues.

I managed to fiddle with it enough to get it to the point where it starts with choke. But it idles really funny and the throttle still feels like it loses power when I roll it. I've read through that manual many times now, it really sucks for retards like me hehe. Ended up calling my mechanic, he's on his way now (he lives down the block). I just couldn't really figure out what kind of adjustments to make to the throttle cable. I unscrewed the locks and the adjustment nuts and then screwed them back in but don't really know what to look for so hopefully he will explain it.

Plus he'll take a look at my curvy, too. Hopefully I'll sell the kwak this week, and fix my sv next week, just in time for spring. Just wish I could do it myself.

Well if as you say it's not an adjustment issue, then it could be something like a split diaphram or something, but to be honest it's really hard to diagnose with out having the bike to look at myself , I've no doubt it's something simple and your man should have it up & running in no time.

Cheers Mark.
