Default Ignition Fuse blowing

Hi

Set off for the BSB meet at thruxton today, pulled over along the way to check directions & my bike cut out. Checked all the usuals & then the fuses & found the ignition fuse had blown (while idling!!). Replaced it with the spare 10amp fuse & was fine for about a mile when it cut out on a roundabout. Ignition fuse was blown again so replaced it with the 15amp spare & set off. It cut out again about 2 miles down the road & once again the ignition fuse was the problem. So with no more spare fuses & convinced the problem wasn't just dodgy fuses I called recovery & got brought home.

The bike is a K5 SV650S & there are no obvious shorts or bare wires although I haven't taken everything apart yet to check properly. I've done a search of the forum & checked the wiring loom for chaffing under the seat as suggested but it doesn't look like that is it.

The breakdown mechanic thought it might be the fuel relay which is wired into the same fuse as the ignition. I have noticed in the past that when I turn the ignition off there is very often a rapid clicking sound from the rear of the bike for a second or two but this has been happenning since I've had the bike (January this year) so I thought it was normal.

Has anybody had the same problem or any ideas on what might be the cause? What about the clicking from the rear when the bike is switched off, is that normal??

Does anybody have a spare relay box I could buy off them to try?

The only mods on the bike are a Meta alarm & mini indicators (with resistor), all of which were on the bike when I got it. Last weekend I fitted motrax mirror indicators but I was very careful with the wiring & the indicators go through a different fuse anyway...

Sorry for the huge post but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never had any clicking when ignition switched off myself, sounds like a relay of some sort, sorry I can't help.

thanks for the reply mate - thats one question answered at least! I think swapping the fuel relay box out is going to be the first step.

I am sure this is the fuse I blew when playing around with resistors when fitting my LED indicators. Is the LED part of the dash blank and the fuel pump doesnt hum when first turning the ignition on?

If so it could be worth disconnecting the indicators, the fuse could only blown after they have been turned on. Maybe this is why it lasted 10 mins.

Disconnect your indicators (or just don't use them) and go for a ride (take plenty of fuses though, just in case)( alternatively you could just use your indicators whilst parked up but where's the fun in that!). If it doesn't happen again, you may have found your fault.

If it does then you can look at the relay.

afraid not - its a K5 on a 54 plate & I got as a part-ex from a Triumph dealer. they did give a 3-month warranty but that has expired.
How long is the manufacturer's warranty & is it transferrable?

There is a separate fuse for the indicators so I thought that they couldn't be the cause?!!? I think I might give the 'ride around without using them' a try though - once my local dealer gets more fuses in!

The fuel pump does hum as soon as the ignition is turned on (as long as the alarm/immobiliser is disengaged) & everything on the dash does come on. I think I might remove the LED resistor completely as I now have bulb indicators in my mirrors as well as the fairing LED indicators so the resistance in the circuit should be high enough without the extra resistor.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll let you know how I get on but it might be a while as I'm going to be out of the country for a while & don't think I'll manage to get this sorted before I go.
