This may be a daft one to ask about, but im only familiar with cage engines and i havent heard an sv650 running before mine.
With the bike in neutral a blip of the throttle produces a "clunk", its quite a heavy sound which you can feel through the seat. It does it right as the engine comes off idle when you blip the throttle quickly. ![]() Not sure if its related but theres a bit of a tap sounds like its coming from the rear cylinder at idle, sounds a bit like tappets. Bike is a 2002 naked with 13000miles. unknown history. Cheers Chris |

Is that for the "clunk" or the tapping?

for the tapping! The clunk might be your tick over set to low! What revs does it tick over at?

erm around or just below 1000. what goes bang if the idle is too low?
oh another thing, its only when the throttle is "snapped" open that it makes the noise, advancing the throttle slowly doesnt make it move |

Yep your tick over needs turning up and the noise well go away! the adjuster is located on the left of the bike below the tank. Warm the bike up and adjust it to 1200 to 1300 RPM then blip the throttle and check the RMP again! |

ok cheers guys.
will get both tensioners out and checked, which appears to be a right t#@t due to the tightness of all the parts but while im in there ill do the mod to make carb balancing easier. the front tensioner looks fine, plenty spring pressure and cant be pushed back in without winding it back properly. What did you mean by RMP? Chris |

update here:
Well, the clunk has shut up now ive increased the idle to 1300 as suggested, thanks for that one ![]() The front tensioner is back in after a right fight with it, ended up having to wind it back, put it in and then pin the bugger down with a 22mm ring ended spanner put under the frame as the screwdriver was holding it over to one side too far against that central crossmember. What an annoying job. Rear tensioner next weekend woohoo! Whats the most common way for the tensioners to fail, haynes doesnt say what they look like when buggered. cheers chris |
