Default SV650s K3 16k service

Hi,

Well i brought my bike at 15400 miles and since then have put another 6k+ ontop. I realised a month ago i missed my big service and have been wondering what to do about it. Ive decided im going to service the bike myself (plugs, oil and filter etc) next month when i get some cash but i was told that the 16k service includes shimms timing etc and was wondering if theres anyway i can tell if they need looking at and is it something that seriously needs to be done?

Someone before has mentioned you can tell by listening, what should i be listening for?

Appreciate any help

Chris

It's missed the 20K service as well, need to buy 4 spark plugs & replace them twice.

Not sure if you can tell if valves need adjusting by sound ? need to check the clearance .
Mine is coming up to 16 k , will get clerances checked at service , however would imagine they will be fine , other bikes I've owned have only needed minimum valve adjustments , normally approx every 50k , but worth checking imho.

Cheers Steve

Its expensive so cant really afford it straight away, unless theres a way of checking myself. But to be honest at the moment im not to fused about this.

I will get this sorted eventually though.

I'd change the oil and filter straight away, and you can do that yourself in half an hour for £25.Most of the rest is pretty easy to do yourself too, even checking the shims.(no you can't tell by listening to them).Only if you find they need adjusting do things become difficult.

I've recently done my 16k service, and my next service will probably be done at around 22-23k.

The valves/shims can't be heard unless they're stupidly out. You can usually hear if the cam chains need adjusting though (on most bikes, not just the SV).

It depends on how mechanically practical you are, but I didn't check the valves myself. Next time I might. There's a guide on it here, but it applies to curvy's more than pointies (same thing for the valves really).

Don't forget things like pads (check at least - I find it easier to remove calipers to check properly), brake fluid (2year life) and lube various points on the bike (the service manual says where).
