Default The Barge - The End?

Erm... I was there for it's apparent death knell yesterday... Seems they're closing it down for refurbishment and are turning it into a gastro-pub... Didn't think to find out anymore details tho... was more interested in watching the people wandering around the place looking for antiques to take...

Is this the Barge in Battlebridge? Was there a couple of weeks ago and the food was awful, not a scratch on how it used to be. I only live 10 minutes away

Yup, it is indeed the one in Battlesbridge (where we currently have our friday night meets)...

Where abouts you based then? I'm in South Woodham for the next few weeks and then moving to Witham.

Im in Hockley mate, the Barge used to be my favourite place to grab a bite in the summer. The Hawk is now filling that role.

Thats a bit over-dramatic dont you think? Death knell??? WTF? They're just doing a refurb for crying out loud! At the moment the decor is rather dated and will probably look a lot better when finished....and it will smell a lot better after the 1st of july as well

A few years ago the food was truly wonderful - back in the days when it was an 'independant' pub before whatever chain it belongs to got it's hands on it.

Oh yes, & the drink prices were better too !!

Indeed, the food used to be extemely good. So when I said it was now bad, I meant in comparison to before. When I had it a few weeks ago, it was standard pub grub, nothing to get excited about. Hopefully normal service will resume after the refurb.

Any plans for where you lot will meet whilst the pub is closed?
