Looking to get my rear shock re-sprung.
So as I now have the spring in my grubby mitts, I need to borrow a Spring compressor thats up to the job. So anyone got one? I had the offer of one, but thats now fallen through. Thanks David

What shock are you planning on doing this on? I thought the standard SV one is non rebuild type and if you have a GSXR shock then putting a diffrent spring on it will have all the valving off, you will probably end up with no rebound adjustment at worst.

Standard pointy shock as what came on my standard pointy.
Compress the spring, remove the collar, uncompress the spring, slide the spring off, put that aside, get the new spring and reverse the procedure. Well thats what it says in the Hyperpro kit instructions.

You can take the spring off the stock SV650 shock. You have to compress it fully first though to undo the collar.

Thats what we thought in the end, not as simple as most aftermarket shocks. Still leaves the problem of having the valving off when the spring is changed.

Compress the spring, remove half plates and cup and spring pops off. To remove valving you have to actually get inside the shock!. |

From conversations with TSM I think he is referring to the fact that the valving is set up for the standard shock, not the Hyperpro Progressive rather than changing the valving.

Fair enough. It wont be far enough out to worry about it. People change springs on their race bikes by a fair range - ie .8 - .95 without any valving changes.
I suspect the spring will make some worthwhile different to the bike. |

If you fail to get a compressor, I have a ‘work around’ …
Get some ratchet straps … sit on the bike, put ratchet strap/s round the springs, ratchet it down … get off bike, shock retains its ‘squashed’ state as straps are holding it. Remove shock, and disassemble. It goes without saying that you need to use your noggin here as you essentially have a loaded weapon!! ![]() Refitting is the reverse of removal … get some phat b-steward to stand on the spring to compress it, do up ratchet straps and fit to shock etc etc. Can’t say I have done it to a pointy shock, but done it on a car, so assume if it worked on that, a bike shock should be no problem!! ![]() |
