Default Electrical problems

My lights have started to play up.
When the light switch is in the off position & side light position, the side lights are on.
When I move the switch to headlight, the headlight illuminates, but the rear light goes off whether it's on main or dipped beam. Ideas? cos I'm lost

Time to peruse the wiring diagrams.. Have you got the Haynes manual?

If the lights work in some switch positions and not in others then it sounds like the switch...but as ejohn said, time to get out the wiring diagram and voltmeter.
