Default Help - Oil Leak.

Hey doods, got a bit of an oil leak problem. Basically I took the Cylinder covers off the other day to check my valce clearances, when I put the covers back on, one of the bolts on the rear decided to unthread the cylinder thread. Im left with **** all in there. At the time I put some lock tite on the bolt and tightened it as best I could (it reaches a point where it just turns and turns). But i've noticed now that its leaking oil, basically all over the rear of the bike today ... think it mixed with rain water which didnt help =(

My question is, what can I do about this? My first thought was to rethread the bolt hole on the cylinder and replace the bolt with a slightly larger one after re-threading? But is there anyother method I coul use?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ant.

A decent engineering machine shop should be able to fit a helicoil insert for you. It is basically a coil spring with the internal coils the size of the original stud. The original hole is drilled and tapped to suit the outside coils of the spring.

It is surprisingly effective.

Is it an expensive procedure?

Not too bad if they can get at it to re drill the hole and tap it. If the bit has to be removed from the bike it can get expensive.

The beauty of the repair is that it is virtually indistinguishable from the original, and the original bolt, stud etc can still be used.

Yeah I think it could be expensive then. To get to the hole to properly drill an tap it theyd have to remove part of the casing and cams and what not to remove the top part of the cylinder :S **** .

So take the head off and take it to them, if you've done the clearances its not much more work.

As I remember the cover bolts are threaded into the cam caps, thus you'll only need to remove them to Helicoil - same as if you were going to remove the cams to re-shim.

Haynes reckon you should use a new head gasket on reassembly, doing it this way should only be an hour or less in time to do the job.
Otherwise

or similar and helicoil it yourself.

The 2 bigger bolts on the same side as the camchain are in the bearing shells, the smaller one on the other side is right into the head casting.

Edit: but if it was the smaller one then you could just drill right through (wash the swarf out first) and put a nyloc nut underneath, try BAPP for the longer bolt, Bodge-tastic
