Default Pointy not starting - advice

Hi,

I'm a new biker and the SV650s is my first bike so please forgive me if I am being a bit thick; I have a problem with my bike not starting. It is a 2005 55 reg SV650S and it appears that the battery is dead but when hooked it to the charger it has power? The bike has a datatool alarm fitted which did drain the battery when the bike was sitting for a couple of weeks but I rode out on Sunday so has only been sitting 2 days. I have searched on the forum and all of the starting problems seem to be with curvy's rather than pointy's. I am assuming that my battery just needs replacing but I would be really grateful for any advice you can give me.

Thanks

Exclamation Re: Pointy not starting - advice

Hello I have exactly the same model + a Datatool and mine did exactly the same thing, Most likely to be the Battery, could be your regulator/rectifier... id go with the battery first though.
mine got to the point that i didnt even get my display up after a full nights charge.

Welcome BTW ! ! ! !

Welcome to the house that is mad!!

OK, a couple of things to clarify first. Apologies for granny-eggs treatment, but, sidestand down, in neutral, kill switch checked, when you pull the clutch & hit the button, what happens? Nothing? Or a series of rapid clicks? Or it attempts to turn over, but never fires?

Chances are that the battery will need replacing, but if the charging circuit isn't working right, you'll just start eating batteries, which gets expensive. Better to make sure that's working too.

Yeah it's in neutral, side stand down , and checked kill switch. When you press the ignition switch it sounds like it is trying to start but then it just dies to nothing.

I have read about the regulator/rectifier and wasn't sure if that was just for the curvy's? Will check the charging circuit tonight and have left the battery charging today.

I also wasn't sure if the alarm had anything to do with it? Had a nightmare trying to stop it from going off last night!

No and has fairly low milage 3,600. A new battery I can handle, was just worried it would be something more costly!

My money too is on the battery, being drained by leaving the alarm on for a couple of weeks.

Still, check the reg./rect. as per what you've probably read on here during your search. I'd hate for you to buy a battery, then need to replace that because the reg./rect. is faulty too.

I have to say that's a relief! I do love my bike but I could have smashed it up last night! I have just got a new lowered seat (already had dogbones done) so I can touch the floor now and was so excited about going out for a ride in the sunshine and bike was having none of it!

Thanks for the welcome btw and for not making me feel stupid!

Hehe make sure you haven't done what I've done a few times...hit the emergency shut-off switch and call people out to 'fix' it when it's perfectly fine!
It's great being a girl
