Default Any Pug 306 owners on here?

I know there are cos i've seen pictures of them!!! Im looking to downsize (or upsize whichever way you look at it) from my Mazda Mx5. Im looking for a car that will do motorway miles with little pain, cheap & cheerful motoring. My 5 is just too nice for this kind of thing so I'll either let my girlfriend have it or I'll sell it to someone who can appreciate driving it on the roads it should do. I dont know whether to go with an oil burner or a cheaper petrol (doing about 14k in work driving alone) and just want to keep costs down as I'll save the rest & maybe even buy a 2nd bike!

I've registered with the 306 forums but I like the security of this place for those who have one to tell me how it is

I had a Dturbo for two years and the g/f has a 1.6 Meridian.

You too will grow to hate it before long.

The handling is OK if you invest in 17"s and decent rubber. I'd advise against buying a lowered one tho. It's the build quality that lets an old one down, and the newest you'll get is about 4yrs old now.

Buy the newest, low miler you can find and it'll be fine for a couple of years. After that you'll probably start to pile money into it.

So, wanna do a swap????

I've got a '98 XSi 5-door. Done >55000 miles in the last two years since I got it, and it's still going strong! Had to do a bit of servicing myself, but I've had no problems. Fuel economy isn't superb, but that's more to do with me and my foot than the car. Main thing I like about my 306 is that it handles well compared to the newer, taller cars.

Bought a wright-off (front end smash) 306 Td (M reg), fixed her up and she's been fine. Had her 2 years now and she handles ok but don't lower them else you go through various front suspension parts like they're going outta fashion (I've had 5 link arms replaced in the 2 years since owning it!!).

No serious problems though, only this, one set of tyres, one set of pads, one thermostat and a water pump replaced in 2 years and I don't treat her to good!!!!

She's been reliable, she's cheap to run and insure and she goes resonably well (she's sit at 110 all day on my private test track )

Hope this helps
Regards

I'm not really interested in it being a good handler, i'm basically after a car which well get me from a to b with the smallest cost, while not being the most unattractive beast on the road. The 306 is typically classlessly french, much like the Clio, just thought the Pug was put together a bit better.....

what the hell do you guys do to your cars? I have just sold a 1997 DTurbo with 127k on the clock, owned for the last 45k and never broken down once. In that time i replaced:
battery
starter
alternator (but that was to upgrade due to the amount of extra electrics i had in the boot)
glow plugs
4 tyres

was fine for the motorway cruising at up to 90. any more and it got a bit light. fuel economy about 43mpg, up to 50 if you treat it nicely. did fit some 15" OZ alloys and Toyo Proxs tyres for a bit which improved the handling, but they are fine as standard for a car of that era (and price)

excellent sounds like a good cheap runner which will suit me fine. Would like to be able to be getting 45+mpg if i can, the higher the better and dont usually go above 80 on the commute anyway as its not really worth it in the time i save, might see if i can pick up an early mk2 with the facelift for as little as possible.....
