I have a curvy SV650S which I have only recently bought. I recently checked the oil level and couldn't see anything in the inspection window. I bought a 2 litre can of oil and topped it up. I got all 2 litres in and still there is nothing showing in the inspection window.
I'm now worried that I've overfilled it and there is something up with the inspection window. What should I do? |

Firstly, how are you checking? Is the bike upright ? If it's on the sidestand it would need to be grossly overfilled before the oil would be visible in the sight glass.
A basic one I know and apologies if this sounds patronising, but it wouldn't be the first time.

I started doubting myself but have just been down to the works garage and the inspection window still apears empty when the bike is upright.

In that case put in on the sidestand and see if the window clears out, pull the bike up towards you and you should see the level appear, if you don't there's nothing in it.

If the bike is upright on a level surface, and you've put 2L of oil in it so far then either:
1) You are seeing a silver plate and there was almost nothing in it (bad) 2) You are looking into the sight glass and seeing black. In which case it's got too much, You should see a silver plate about 5mm behind the glass. In this case it's not as bad but should still be set correctly.

I wondered if maybe the bike was running with no oil but surely would have died if it was short of 2l considering the manual says a complete oil change is only 2.4l.
I've just been down to the garage and DAMN, DAMN, DAMN I've overfilled the oil! The bike has lower fairings fitted and I've only just noticed the circular hole in the right side which leads to the actual oil inspection window. I've been looking at the engine coolant reservoir. I'm now gonna have to drain off the oil, replenish with new stuff and fill up the coolant reservoir seeing as it is the collant that is empty. Thanks for your help. Regards A.N Idiot |

Loosen off the oil filter and drain the excess into a container under there.
Checking your oil is the single most important bit of maintenance you do,so at least you now know how to do it. ![]()
