Bad luck and no luck

After the van hitting my bike back in May I am stilll having a fight with the other insuance company as they are still denying it was there driver that hit me as there is no actual eye witnesses, my luck has got even worse. 4th dimension that had taken my bike to asses it for damage called saying they have to return it to me or they will start charging for storage, so that was fine arranged to get it brought back to me only to find there had been more damage done to it!!! It is a cat B right off but I was going to take it to bits and sell the parts that are ok on it, one of which was the tank but look at the mess of it now!!! I called them and they asked for photos to be sent to them and they said they wil get it sorted but still I didnt expect more damage to be done by the company assesing her

Morning all.
Sorry to hear of your problems. It's all to familiar I'm afraid, I had a customer knocked off his Fireblade once at very low speed, he rang me on his way to hospital regarding picking up his bike. Unbeknown to me the Police had called out a recovery truck. Fortunately I got there just in time to prevent the recovery moron winching the bike onto the back of his tilt & slide truck on it's side.
His excuse was that it wouldn't roll. All that was preventing it rolling was a warped front disc! I removed the caliper & it rolled perfectly.
He still wanted to take it & argued the toss, but with me being a reasonably hefty Skinhead type after a bit he thought better of it.
After an accident it's probably the last thing on your mind, but one should always ask all concerned about any charges such as recovery or storage, especially if it looks as if there is going to be a dispute over liability that will drag the claim out for a long time.
It's perfectly legitimate for businesses to charge for such things, after all they have done the work, but sadly many don't inform the customer. I suspect that the more unscrupulous hope that they will end up with the bike in lieu of said charges. For it's common knowledge that used bike parts, or 'damaged repairables' can be worth a mint.

I remember reading about this sort of practice in Streetfighter magazine. The author of the article said that he had on more than one occassion witnessed a bike with very minor damage (essentially just broken fairings) being properly written off by someone picking the bike up with a winch then literally dropping it onto the back of the truck on its side.

I think I remember being told about that article Ceri, depressing innit!
On a similar theme......Yesterday I had an 03 CBR6 collected from me by Universal salvage, it was a cat c from having clipped the kerb & flipped at low speed. It was still running & rideable i.e. the classic 'damaged repairable'.
The chap from Universal who are one of the larger salvage firms told me that Universal have just been bought by a consortium of Yanks, who by the look of things are trying to corner the UK salvage market, as they have already bought another large company besides Universal, & are after a 3rd.

So folks expect to see more of the aforementioned sort of malarky, for we all know the 'Hard ass anything for a buck asset stripping' tactics of big American companies! (& Governments) Furthermore, Insurance companies, salvage companies, & recovery firms are increasingly up each others backsides with 'hand in glove scratch your back' relationships. Soon I imagine, their business will be conducted in public toilets using brown paper bags stuffed with used notes! (not that I'm cynical or anything).....

As I said after an accident it's difficult to think clearly, but providing you're conscious if you can remember to get a friend, partner, or trusted mechanic to attend the scene it could save your bike from the 'Sharks' & help keep our ever increasing insurance premiums down to an almost affordable level.
